Big red wire and fuse holder???

Hi all

When changing the HBC module on my newly acquired (and rather neglected!) 2l estate, I noticed a heavy red wire, with an enormous in-line fuse holder, that had not been connected to the battery positive - presumably when the last owner changed the battery.

I have noticed that the rear screen wiper and heater are not working.  Could this be the power supply to the tailgate?

If so what should the fuse rating be?

Thanks

John

I think its most likely that there has been some 'extra' on the car in the past. Does it show signs of, for example, a large Hi Fi  unit, towing gear,or similar?. There are only two heavy red cables on mine, both clearly original fit. The rear wiper is covered by relay No1 and the heated rear screen by relay No5 in the drivers side fuse box. Fuse no 20,listed as 20amp,in the same box covers the Heated rear screen.Fuse No 7 covers the wiper motors and washer pumps.  All the wiring for the tailgate is fed through a grommet in the top corner and of course includes the reversing lights and door lock/alarm. Has the fuse box got a cover and is it properly fitted. Water in this or the other box will cause all manner of problems. Fuse box covers and battery cover most important. Let us know how you get on.Mike

Sounds like someone had installed an amp or some other kit as has been said. The tailgate issues will be unrelated I imagine

Has it or did it have a tow bar?

The scrap car I have just stripped did and that had a wire with an in line fuse holder running right down the car to the tail gate loom.

The tow bar electrics had been spliced in (not very well) in the same area so may be worth having a look!

Thanks all.

I am sure you are right ... the same wire, I now find runs loosly over the CD changer.

Now I shall have to stir myself into investigating the tailgate equipment.
