2.0l auto gearbox prob.Help please!!

Hi just wondered if any one could help. I have a problem with my gearbox ,it takes five to ten minutes to engage top gear. Once it does engage top gear, the gearbox works perfectly for the rest of my journey. There is no niose, slipping or any other problems with the box. Could it be the sensor that controls forth gear ? seemingly the speedo tells the sensor that it is time to change from third to forth gear. Any advice would be much apprieciated thanks Stuart

Does the O/D light on the dash behave normally i.e. goes off and on when the selector button is pressed ? I take it you know that the car must be travelling at 50 mph before the O/D engages ?

Also some models dont engage until engine is up to temperature, so if thermostat is stuck open or missing this could cause problem. Watch temperature gauge in relation to when it finds top gear. regards Dave.

Check that your Ford garage knows one end of a Scorpio from the other, there are Ford mechanics who will have never seen one let alone trouble shoot a complicated and recalcitrant autobox ! Maybe better going to an Auto Specialist.

UNBELIEVABLE!!! I stumbled across the fault by pure accident.the brake pedal went solid under braking and i found the small plastic pipe to be broken between the servo and the air intake.after replacing the pipe the brakes were ok and ALSO the gearbox is perfect?i pulled out the pipe again and drove the car, once again top gear would not engage.seems crazy i know but its cured.

Well, that's a new one ! I didn't think engine vacuum had anything to do with gear selection, I thought it was all electronic microchip wizzardry. Buy yourself a drink

The older scorpio Mk3 and the current 12 v use vacum for the fourth gear but ALL the later scorpios 94/98 AFAIK had completely electronic garbox .

Welcome Stuart Good to hear that you have a fix for your problem. Thinking back I had a similar problem with a vacuum pipe on my mk3 about fifteen years ago. What year is your 2 litre?

Stuart Sounds like you may have an A4LD. Are we talking a Scorpio or a Granada?

OK Stuart they dropped the Granada bit in November 94 when they brought out the new Scorpio, have a look at the car on the banner if yours does not look like that it would explain why your fix was vacuum based rather than electronic. A4LD against A4LDE Have a look at http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/difference.htm Geoff
