2.5td black smoke and low mpg

I have a 96 2.5 td estate  
 
I have a problem that on acc it heavy black smokes.  
There is plenty of turbo boost.
Then as if by magic i lose power and it stops smoking.
( not a turbo problem its been checked )  
 
I have tryied to get fault codes but the reader i have wont connect to the ecu. A colegue with a snap on obd2 reader got the code of 1503 ( aux speed sensor ) but where the hell is that ?  
 
any advice would be appreciated

Im Presuming that you mean the 'Pleated' one on the inlet side. This seems to be ok

Check that the EGR valve is working, see todays advice page.

The speed sensor aka the VSS is found on the gearbox.
 
Have you checked the air filter to see if its blocked? As mentioned above check that the egr isn't stuck in the 'open' position.
