Automatic Transmission Delay

I have a 1995 12 valve Ultima and am experiencing a delay in pick up when cold, especially in reverse. I can put it in gear, press slightly on the accelerator and nothing will happen for a few seconds, then it engages with a jolt. Any one got any ideas - I appear to have ample fluid , its showing above the minimum in the bottle.

You could try putting a new filter and oil in the box . Its quite thick when its cold and sometimes doing that clears the problem, but I think its more likely to be a "old age " problem with the G/box and it may be on its last. But that is looking on the black side of things. .. I presume its better when its HOT.
