Hello,
My Scorpio has started to make a sqeeking sound when driven, sounding like the rear tyres rubbing against the wheel arches. I ran my fingers along the inside of the tyres, and they are far from touching anything. I also tried giving the rear end some good pushes, to see if I could find the source of the noise, but nothing could be heard.
Any ideas what it might be?

Except that I couldn't feel any sideways movement last time I checked, I have no clue. My plan was to get the car indoors this weekend, get the wheels off and have a peek, but would still appreciate any suggestions.

The last time I had a bearing problem, I noticed the centre of the wheel was getting very hot. At the time I didn't realise it was the bearing until it failed.
I remember thinking at the time...."ahhh....now thats why it was getting hot".
It's worth a try & it's a simple check

Sounds like the wheel bearing. Mine did exactly the same . You need to check quickly or it will wear the hub and ultimately they have been known to cause a total collapse. THIS may help.

If you suspect the bearing , try loosening ( just a wee bit, half a turn ) the big 32mm nut , if the noise lessens, disappears or gets worse then you know it's the bearing.

I've had a listen to the noise while driving, and it's definately related to the rotation of the wheel, and it seems to disappear when doing right hand turns (noise comes from the right hand side rear wheel).
I will have a closer look tomorrow, as I can take the car in-doors then, but I do expect to find a broken bearing.
Slightly off-topic, but.. Guess how much my FMD quoted me today for a single headlamp washer? £80 
No way, I said.

Could I be right in guessing that a bearing could break in such a way that it still supported the wheel (sideways) and would only show signs of being broken under pressure?
That would give sense to the fact that the sound dissappears in right hand turns, as that would transfer pressure from the right wheel to the left.

It is a possibility. The only way to know is to take it off & have a look.
If you do this now then you might have saved the hub.
Leave it much longer & the noise could increase to a squealing at speed & a kind of creaking noise when going very slow. That is when you know you will need a new hub as well.
This is what happened when my first ever bearing went

MY advice is actually look at the bearings. If they start to break up you will not get any movement until the whole thing has broken. I have just done my Offside well a couple of month ago and just had a squeek, NO play or any other syptoms but on taking apart the whole bearing cage on innner and outer had started to break up ... for what it costs and the time it takes its well worth checking. I can do a bearing on the rear in about 45 mins now .

I decided to change the bearing just to be on the safe side. Cost me £65 for a complete kit.
Road safety isn't something I take lightly (brakes, bearings, tyres, etc. MUST be properly maintaned imho).
