O/D lamp flashing and no speedo

Firstly a big hi to everyone, I'm a newbie on here...
I own a Scorpio 97 (P) 2.0 Auto and it has unfortunately become poorly.
Whilst driving a few weeks back suddenly the speedo ceased to work, it dropped to zero and hasn't moved since, also the overdrive lamp started flashing, and gear changes especially in drive are eratic.
I have visited the fordscorpio.co.uk site and found info which seems to point to the vehicle speed sensor failing. I then bought a sensor and set about changing it, however for the life of me I can't find it on the car. Lying underneath the car looking up at the auto box I can just about see some wires on the top of the box, however this does not seem to relate to the diagrams on the fordscorpio.co.uk site, the next problem is if this is the wiring to the VSS sensor, how on earth can I get to it as the exhaust and transmission tunnel seem to be in the way.
I would love to just take it and get it fixed but having just moved house and with a baby on the way I just don't have the funds, I really need to sort this on a budget.
Any advice anyone could offer would be greatly received and appreciated.

It should be right near the back of the box on the drivers side.
And yes your symptoms do point to a failed VSS..

This is probably just me having a blonde moment (another) but I still cant find this VSS sensor, there dosen't appear to be any wiring at all at the back of the box that I can see leading to anything... certainly nothing that resembles a VSS sensor...
Think I need an idiots step by step guide...
Soz to be a pain but any further info would be helpful

Perhaps it's on the passenger side ??
I had an A4LDe sitting on the drive 2 weeks ago but I can't for the life of me remeber which side it was on.
