Still pinking.......not anymore!!

Before I start I would like to apologise to whoever it was who advised me to fit a new fuel rail pressure regulator. I should have listened to this advise instead of fitting a second hand one. After replacing various bits...ECT, IAT, EGR the pinking went but came back, but usually not as bad. It got to the point where it was just intermitent, & for a while I could live with it. Then I got to thinking that maybe the second hand FRPR was indeed dodgy, so I put the original one back in to compare. There was no difference. It was still pinking intermitently. I decided to take an expensive chance & order a brand new FRPR from FMD at £41.50. I fitted it today & toddled off to the rank for my nightly grief, picking up drunken idiots....... NO PINKING!!!!!!........ Hallelujah.....not even a slight knock. Just one problem though......It used to start on the button every time, but every now & then it takes about 2 or 3 cranks to start. I didn't dis-connect the battery when I fitted the new FRPR.....should I have done?

Disconected battery today for 1 hour then re-connected it. Car started fine, but later on in the evening it was playing up again. Starts fine when cold, but when hot it needs turning over a few times, & when it does start there is a shudder as though it is flooded. How can this be with a brand new frpr. I've got rid of the pinking...& now the b****r won't start right when it's hot

JC, THIS seems to point to the FPR as Andrew says, albeit you have replaced it. Mike

The frpr is a brand new one from Ford. If even has a sticker on the pipe which states the date it was tested - 09/05. If it is a dud then how am I going to convince FMD of this?

Is the vacuum pipe from the manifold to the regulator OK, it drops the pressure 1/2 bar at low revs. There is a valve on the manifold where you can check the pressure with a gauge. It could still be low pressure caused by a faulty non return valve in the pump. Dave

Vacuum pipe is fine. I've not got a guage to test the pressure, might have to ask mechanic to check it. It is annoying because the car runs perfectly now with no pinking, just has trouble starting sometimes when hot, but never had this problem when the car was pinking. Thanks for the advice guys

It may be worth checking the spark plugs,if you had low pressure & pre ignition they may have suffered if you had the problem for some time

I did check the plugs a few weeks ago & they were a bit blackened, but seemed to clean up ok though. I may invest in some new ones in the near future anyway. The weirdest thing.......I've been on the rank again tonight & the car has been starting first time, every time without a hint of any trouble There was another cab that broke down on the rank tonight, so maybe the gremlins got bored of my car & jumped in his
