Battery discharging when Parked

My 2.9 12 valve keeps running the battery down when parked up for any length of time. I have a third party alarm on the car, is this the most likely culprit?

mine was doing this recently.
changed the battery and it was ok (also made sure it was getting the proper charging power/ voltage)
ask your local spares / garage to check battery.

an alarm should not drain a battery that quick.
dont forget from the alarm manufacturers point of view, they are in the business of selling alarms, they dont want to design something that flattens batteries, alarms dont normally do this , i mean i would expect a couple of weeks before the battery runs down.

you can also buy a solar charger that keeps it topped up . you put them on the dash when you leave the car for any length of time (say on hoidays) at plug it into the cigarette lighter.

my garage put the wrong battery on mine and caused a nightmare, so get the CORRECT rating battery.

check your alternator output.

if all else fails, check for current drain (or ask auto electrician) you use an ammeter on the battery terminal to monitor its output, then one by one isolate the circuits via fuses.

yes ALARM and RADIO are potential culprits but only if faulty.
other potentials are leaking water into a control box, failed components in the car that are causing heavy drain,  these must be located systamaticallly.

i reccomnend an auto electrician if the battery does not fix it.

check battery using a 'drop tester' from car spares shop (ask them to do it)

Hi, mine was also doing this, if I parked it up for a couple of days it would be dead, but I replaced the battery and after a week its still fine.

K K, whilst not disagreeing with any of the previous posts it is a fact that 'aftermarket alarms' can be a source of electrical problems on the Scorpio because of its' sophisticated electrics.

Also check the light in the glove box, in some cases (most of ) it remains on, the the glove box hinges deteriorate a bit, and just a 1-2 mm play in the hinge is enough not to triger the shut off switch.

I also have an aftermarket alarm added, and the scorp stood un-started about 3 weeks, and still fires at a flick of a key. Also check you battery, how old, what rating. My battery before packing up it would discharge in 2-3 days, i was charging it and then it was ok for another 2-3 days, now i have a new calcim batter....no more problems.

Also to check if the electrics on the car really have a problem you could disconnect the + terminal and connect a amp-meter betwen the battery and the + terminal of the car, with the courtesy lights switch off, dors closed...etc....the current draw should be under 200 mA.....if it's greater the something is dischargeing the battery

330AhHuh

Sure you don't mean 330CCA?

I recently put in a 80A battery rated for 700 (not CCA, which according to the seller is an american standard, but the european/norwegian/whatever version of it which should according to him be some 30% stricter. Don't know if he was talking cow crap or not, but it was a good battery)

If it is 330CCA, then I would guess it's a bit on the low side. My previous battery was 60Ah/500CCA, and that had trouble starting the car from time to time.

Before you let the garage touch it, check the multiplugs going to the fusebox, if the box got very wet though, it might need a rebuild...

There is a thread here with a similar problem to what you have, it may help you.

Hope this helps, Bruce.

Have you disconnected the large black plug in front of the drivers side fuse box ?

Your symptoms are typical of this plug not being replaced properly. It can seem to be fitted properly but not making full contact.

Worth a look

Paul, your a diamond;

Did as you suggested and lights and indicators are working again now, I still have a short somewhere and am loathe to investigate more in case I make things worse.

In my attempts to fix the problem I have made an Auxillary fuse box cover out of an old 2litre plastic lemonade bottle, this fits quite snugly over the fuse box on the passenger side

You guys  are tops

If it's a saloon you should perhaps check if the light in the boot goes out. I believe someone recently had a similar battery drain problem and it was found to be the boot light.
