Oil in coolant reservoir (help needed)

I discovered my 20i-16 was using up oil (3l-7000km) so i decided to look a bit further. On opening the coolant reservoir deep brown liquid came out. Obviously the oil is leaking into the cooling system. What is it likely to be? gasket or a cracked head? Is there any way to know before taking the head off? Edit: All was running fine until I used Bars leaks to try to repair my heater matrix

Could also be gear box oil check the level in the gear box as well...

hi it's more likley to be a cracked head, they ten to go bewteen cylinders 2 and 3 on the inlet side however, this is more of a 2.3 issue. remove the thermo stat and test it in a pan of hot water, if it doesnt open then the stats failed. i cant think of any way of telling if summat else has gone with out stripping the engine down

If you intend to repair it yourself drain the oil and see whhat you get, more than likley more of the same. it could be either gasket or head if you take the head off the gasket will have tell tall signs of failure. if the gasket looks good get the head checked out HTH al

Small update on my part: Gasket had some damage between oil and coolant lines. Both block and head were not cracked Also discovered the source of my bad idle: a crack in the exhaust manifold. Repaired that with some metal putty. (also found out that it is not advisable to try to mount the exahust manifold AFTER you put on the head )

Another problem came up when i finished assembling the engine. I seem to have an electrical problem. The dials turn , the speedo is stuck on 240 KM/h rev counter is at 70000 rpm, temp is at max (this I expected as the temp sensor was damaged) and worse the car doesn't start. The led on the dash is flashing rapidly. Anyone?

Firstly readThis re the Pats. Secondly it all seems to point to a battery problem. If the dials all spin right round that is a sure sign. There is a thread running at the moment about 'stuck' needles. Also lookHere at Fault Finder. Be sure you have re-connected ALL the battery cables. There is a small black one which often gets missed when the battery is replaced.

Thx mate! I did forget to connect a battery cable. Unfortunately the car needs to go to FMD tomorrow because the cam timing is off

Yes, read through it.. But I haven't got the time today to get my hands oily again.. have to entertain the wife . Good thing is i have to go to work tomorrow in my fun car (Renault 5 GTTurbo )

Picked up the car today and all runs fine again, the FMD even managed to reset the car so I have a smooth idle again! Even gave me a 30% discount on parts and 25% discount on labour.
