Slight thump

Hi.  Is it normal to have a slight thump from the gearbox when changing from 1st to 2nd, the overdrive light is flashing and i haven't yet taken the car out for a decent run to see if it is changing into 4th yet. Fluid seems ok, red and no burning smell.

Hi. Overdrive light flashing could indicate a fualt with the autobox, this may help you.

The fluid still being red is a good sign, it's normally dirty brown by the time anything starts going wrong, whats the mileage of the Scorp?

Believe it or not 191,000  I only got it last week, paid £310 for it off e bay it was as it was described with a few electrical faults, ie boot would't open (using a bit of wire to pull lever) fixed that within 2 minutes (sticking solenoid) ,wouln't start from hot, found problem with inhibitor switch (got that bypassed at the moment) a few bulbs gone in dash but nothing major, dipping mirror us,but bodywork good in dark metallic green, engine starts first time seems to be ok,still has cd changer  7000 series radio which is ok,actually for the money it seems a good buy, lovely leather etc. It runs ok but the gearchange just seems to be a bit too harsh especially from 1st to 2nd and as i said i don't know about 4th yet,i have had it up to 60mph and it seems quite smooth and quiet.

191,000, wow Cool

At nearly 200k don't be shocked if the box does need a recon, even if most of that clocked up is motorway miles. My car was much the same when I bought it, loads of 'faults', most easily sorted over the first weekend I onwed it (95k though Wink).

Someone more knowedgeable can probably help you more with the fault codes, you need someone to give you a scan Wink

Regards, Bruce.

the gearbox is electronic if you have bypassed the inhibitor switch when you drive the car the ECM will think the car is still in park or neutral ! so fix that first then see whats going on!

Hello Crop,

You said:
'It runs ok but the gearchange just seems to be a bit too harsh especially from 1st to 2nd and as i said i don't know about 4th yet,i have had it up to 60mph and it seems quite smooth and quiet.'

If all is working properly, it should change into 4th at 50mph in E mode!

Mine didn't, until the local specialist replaced by speed sensor.

Regards.

Hi Roger, Octavian_p,maybe it did change into 4th as i said it is quite smooth at speed so maybe i just didn't notice the change up. thanks for the reply. i wish i could get a scan but i can't see me getting one for myself for a while, the one i had for my earlier car an omega 1995 is "lost" at the moment and i dont know if it will work with this one anyway.

Get the car at over 50 and watch the revs, press the little O/D on the shifter and see if the revs rise Smiley

It would help matters if you knew whether you were getting 4th, some electrical faults disable overdrive.

What about the Vehicle speed sensor, could that be a candidate?
