Cracked coolant tank

Hi,
Ive recently bought a 2.5TD N reg scorpio..I smelt burning as i was driving and the coolant light came on ..I checked coolant level and it was completly dry.I quickly filled it only to find out that the tank is cracked and is leaking the coolant out..A friend of mine suggested that maybe a pressure build up has caused the tank to crack..Also said it could be something to do with the head gasket?Any help would be greatly appreciated..Thanks

The details for the system are Here. Read through the links.  It could just be a simple problem of the tank being damaged. Can you effect any sort of temporary repair or a member on here may well have a replacement tank.

My old Scorp had a crack in the bottom of the coolant tank. There didn't seen to be any reason why it should have cracked, the car was running fine.
I replaced the tank & that seemed to be the end of it. Put it down to premature failure Smiley

Hi Craig,
Would be very suprised if the tank cracked due to a preasure build up caused by a shot head gasket.
In my experience there are parts of the cooling system that are weaker and would have failed first.
As simmo suggests try replacing the tank and take it from there. When you get another tank keap an eye open for other tell tale signs of a blown head gasket.
You could also take it to a garage who could test the coolant with a sniffer for hydrocarbons, this would give you a deffinate answer if the head gasket is gone.

I replaced the tank on my 16v a while back and it wasn't expensive (brand new from my FMD), so I would advice on checking with your FMD. Don't remember how much I paid, but I remember being pleasantly surprised when I got the bill  Wink
