Seriously bad vibes, help!!

On the way home tonight as the car was warming up, I noticed that the engine began to vibrate quite heavily. I could feel my whole leg vibrate as I sat there with my foot on the brake pedal. Anyway the vibration was not as bad during acceleration although I could still feel it and there was also a slight loss of power associated with it. The car was struggling uphill a bit. Also during idling at the traffic lights the fuel computer was telling me that it was using about 2.3litres per hour in drive. In neutral it dropped down to about 1.3 litres per hour. It's definately using a bit more fuel with this vibration problem. GOt home and lifted the bonnet up and you could see the engine vibrating badly. Some people suggested it could be the idle control valve. If it is and I should clean, does anyone have a good photo of what it looks like and how to take it off and clean. If it is a more sinister problem then please comment. Thanks for reading

The engine otherwise runs fine. The idle needle holds constant at the correct rpm 750-800. But it doesn't at any point suggest it is going to die.

Probably far off I know but is the aircon switched off? Had mine off most of the summer (yup, did use it once every few weeks...), when I had it back on for a while the other night I got some vibration at first and it was pulling the revs down more than it used to. Luckily I think it's sorted itself out now... Sounds like something from the ECU, timing or the like, if you was missing a cylinder in a 4 pot, you'd know it Mabye someone with more experience on the sensors can help Bruce.

Check out your ECU which is under the glovebox in a small cradle. It will only take 10 minutes to drop it down, and undo the 10mm bolt that holds the connector and ECU together. Look out for evidence of water ingress which caught me out earlier this year. With all the rain we've been having recently (some of it torrential), water runs down behind the battery (even with the cover in place), and through the big rubber grommet, down the cables and into the connectors. If it IS that, then you need to re-seal that grommet with either a new grommet, or with undersael, or both. Good idea to do it anyway, as winter is just starting.

Thanks for all the replies. It appears to be a misfire. Took it to FMD this morning, bloke reckons it is either a coilpack or loom wiring under the engine cover that has gone. I'm in their hands now, and watching my bank account deplete.

All fixed now, panic over. FMD changed the coil pack and the plug leads and fixed the engine wiring loom at the cost of £180. Thanks to all.
