Radio packed up

Well returned home from holiday last week, to find a dead battery. The battery has died a couple of times on me now, so decided to replace it at the weekend. Went out last night and noticed the radio wasn't working. I switched it off and on again, it all illuminates ok but there is no display nor any output. I have removed the security panel and replaced it, no difference. I have removed the radio and checked the fuse at the back as well as the fuse in the fusebox, both ok. The radio is the 7000 type. Anybody else had a similar problem? Any Ideas?

It's not the code, there is nothing on the display, but it lights up ok. I have actually tried entering the code blind, just to see if just the display had failed, but could not get anything out of the radio.

Hello mate. The 7000 has a common fault where the display goes blank in cold weather but you can still use it. If you lost the keycode it'll display the CODE screen so it seems the unit has gone awol. I know someone on here had problems with the security panel and bought a new one from eBay, I remember it causing similar faults to what you have. Try disconnecting the battery again and see if it'll work once plugged back in, other than that start looking on eBay . Regards, Bruce.

Cheers Bruce. I've had a bit of a play with it this evening, it also helps having 2 Scorps. I took the front panel off the wifes radio and fitted it to mine and the display came up saying wait: So it seems in attempting to put the code in yesterday I locked it out. With a good front panel I have now managed to get the radio working, the wife does want her panel back though so I will have to put up with no display, until I can get a better look at it, but at least there will be sound again. Thanks Dave

The panel is an easy fix. In most of the cases the cooper plating on the back side gets oxidized and don't make proper contact with the radio. Also moisture creeps in and makes a lot of trouble for its user. A night on a warm (not hot) stove will mostly cure it. Cheers

On the way to work this morning the lcd came alive briefly, but then faded away again, so I may have another play later and try to determine exactly where the fault lies. Cheers

Yeah, I think I may end up looking for a spare radio to take the lcd off, to fix mine.

If the display comes back if you push the panel to make a better connection maybe a little blob of blue tack behind it to hold it in place will get you by temporarily. Matt

Just a thought on this problem people seem to be having with radio display and I might well be very WRONG.... There was a method used to connect and mount LCD displays which relied upon a thin strip of rubber trapped between display and the PCB. The rubber has lots of very fine wires linking the front and rear face, the LCD panel being clamped to the PCB tight against the rubber. Now if any moisture got between the rubber and the contacts, it would degrade the contacts then the display would fail or loose segments. The fix is to strip the display off, clean up the contact surfaces and reassemble.

Harry, I get what you mean but that isn't how the display in the 7000 is fixed. I think you're talking about 'zebra' connectors, rubber strips with carbon tracks like they use in calculators. The one on the 7000 is connected through carbon ribbon cables and on mine at least the contacts weren't at fault (had it to bits while plugged in). I think it's down to the display segments dying with the moist air but I may still be wrong... I may have another go before I let my car go though, mine has gone completely now. Regards, Bruce

Mine is also connected via ribbon cable, so pushing on the front panel has no effect on the lcd. I have also tried cleaning the carbon contacts, but still no good. It is strange because when I first switch on the ignition, the lcd sometimes comes to life but the dies again almost immediately. Thanks very much for the replies, I'm going to have one more try at it at the weekend, but if it is the lcd that has gone then I will have to start looking for a replacement unit. Cheers Dave
