Battery fully charged? Battery connections all on ok and tight? possibly selector switch#linkage or starter inhibitor relay R11 in central fuse box?

Are you sure all the black leads are on the battery?. Sometimes a thin black one slips down into the tray area and is missed. Could you have missed a connection on the loom or blown a fuse?.

I must admit that crossed my mind Stuart but as you say 'the little black lead' seems crucial to the starting procedure. Any idea what it actually feeds? or shall we wait for one of our expert 'auto electric' wizards to enlighten us?

Go to This Pagesee won't start, and check the fuses listed....you've allready checked the Relay. My bet would be fuse 42 which is the fuel pump ( Battery side fusebox). You could have been using up fuel in the lines initially.

Would still be turning over though even without fuel Is the PATS light flashing a code?? Might be worth disconnecting the battery for a while then reconnecting it making sure the ignition is off

somethings stopping the starter from turning. Battery, PATS, ignition switch, selector switch or linkage, wiring, fuses, relay, starter?

Are the connections to the starter motor on tight? Or maybe the starter solenoid faulty or starter motor locking up

I 'm sober and awake NOW OK Had this once on another car and it turned out to be the contacts in the starter solenoid. They were completely burnt out. The syptoms were as you state . On the odd occasion it would start ok then nothing for days and days The other thing to check is the LOW tension circuit to the solenoid. Make sure that the connection to it is good and also current flowing when key turned to position 3 Make sure its pre-engaging. if not look to the ingnition switch. had those fail before now.

Hi had another go when i got in from work pats light seems to be working fine even tried the original red key just to make sure and to be honest if it was any other car i would probley go straight to the starter but because i have just changed the fuel cut off loom i keep thinking its something ive done(probley is) as no starter problems like this before, the ingnition switch seems like the next place to go but ive had enough now and its off to the garage but thanks for all your suggestions and will keep you posted thanks again Craig

just a quick update called out my breakdown service(as i get towed to my garage if they cant get it going )the guy went through the basics battery etc but couldnt get a reading to the starter when the key was turned so run a lead direct from the starter to the battery turned over and started straight away,so we know its not the starter and was able to drive it the garage will keep you posted thanks Craig

Hi all Ouch Ouch Ouch that hurt im the best part of £400 lighter but at last i can use the car again starting problem turned out to be connections to the gear box inhibeter i did go over all these connections but thought they was all ok (i did fit the loom on a gravel drive with one axel stand)excuses excuses.as for where the rest of the money went still had a problem on the abs (battery drain fuse 47)found a load of wiring to the main pump shoting out repaired this but abs light still on so asked the garage to run a diagnostic then i get the phone call ,replace wiring to n/s front sensor & replace n/s front sensor he then done a re scan and found a circuit failure on the abs pump this needed removing and the output pins resoldering due to dry joints he fixed it,also asked for an engine diagnostic( a bit of rough idle and slight hesitating at 50 to 60mph)this is what he found and would be grateful of any thougts on the results p1132 lack of ho2s11 switches-sensor indicates rich(see p2196)sensor locked, indicates rich gas analysis co4.41% co2 12.0% hc 0508ppm o2 01.0% lambda 0.898 he did say the fault is showing a lamba sensor but hes not conviced he thinks it could be something else making the lamba fail thanks again to everyone for all your advice cheers Craig
