Steering problem

Hi.  I have a '95 24V estate which has developed a steering fault.  On starting it the other day, I noticed a grinding noise which increased on turning the steering wheel.  When driving, it still makes some noise when travelling straight, but when turning, particularly when at low speeds on sharp corners, it really complains and graunches like hell.

I took it to the local Ford service garage, and they tell me it needs a new steering rack.  Now that surprises me - it was changed about two years ago, just prior to me buying the car....

Power steering fluid was low, may well have been leaking. The steering (up until) the other day seemed fine, was driving arrow straight with no tendency to wander across the road.  Any ideas?  Not convinced it's the rack, but if so, how much will I have to pay?

Thanks for hearing my troubles...

Dont buy one from Ford unless you are an ex director of FarePack..  they are a lot of money..

heres the cheapest ones I know, the one with the speed sensor is for the 24v but the standard one will fit too

If it makes a noise when you start it up without turning it though then it sounds more like the power steering pump...

Sorry to hear of your problem.

Don't know if this will fit your car, but it's Ebay Number 290032784963 .  You can ring these people on 01579 382766. It seems to be a steering rack shop, and they also give a full warranty with it.

£34.99 and it's brand new, and Buy it Now!  Can any Member tell fastflyer if this will fit?   Smiley

Thanks guys - £87 sounds good to me.  Mind you, I reckon it could be the power steering pump too - as you rev the engine, the thing seems to be whining a lot.  I get enough of that from my girlfriend, without the car getting in on the act too   Lips Sealed
