My 2.9 12v has recently started a shuddering when I turn the wheel at low (parking) speeds. It's fine at all other times, and the fluid level is normal, with no leaks that I can see. I think I've identified this as being the Ford "Known Fault" as below: Power steering vibration.....Ford have issued instructions for the replacement of an hydraulic pipe in the power steering, which causes a vibration at parking speeds. (New hose Part No 1 037 481) Does anyone know the cost (approximately) of this hose, and how to fit it please? Better still has anyone got one kicking about that they don't need?

SD, Have you tried the 'lock to lock' method of removing any air from the system? and have you had the front wheels suspended recently?. The latter leads to this problem which can be solved by turning from lock to lock a few times,preferably with the front lifted just enough to take most of the weight off the front wheels but without letting them 'hang'. This avoids straining the seals in the system. You can put the wheels on wet grass,gravel or a couple of old magazines to achieve the same effect. Merry Xmas, Mike.

Thanks Mike. I'll try this. Did try 'lock to lock' yesterday on my drive, as I had recalled reading something along these lines, but didn't realise that I had to take the weight off the steering first. I'll have a go tomorrow as it's just going dark here. Merry Christmas to you.

SD, same thing happened to me a few months back when I had the front bumper off...had to turn the front wheels lock to lock with the ign off, aftwerwards it gave me the rumbling, worse than I had it from jacking the car up. Give it until New Year and see if it clears first Regards, Bruce.

Spanners...I had my Scorp up in the air last week for about 2 hours. After dropping it, it was juddering on full lock.... Juddering stopped after about 50 miles I've read about that power steering pipe as well, but never bothered to replace it, as the juddering always goes away. Maybe replacing this pipe will actually cure this common problem completely, once & for all...... ...Spanners....if you replace the pipe & get no more juddering after the front wheels have been up....then please let us know....because it is a problem & when it happens, it makes you think that the steering rack is f**ked Merry Christmas & a happy new year Spanners, All the best.....Jonny

Cheers Jonny. I'm gonna try the lock to lock again today. Also check Steering Fluid again, and have another general look over the steering area. I'll Come back later with results. Hello Sd Had the same thing happen earlier this year. I had taken the car to a local auto gearbox co to have the oil changed and they also did flushing and replacement of power steering fluid. I mentioned the juddering and the man disappeared into his office and 5 minutes later returned with what looked like a toothpaste tube. He said that he'd had it a while but it was a power steering additive. He squeezed it into the resorvoir- charged me a fiver and sent me on my way. I have had no trouble since. I have no idea what the stuff was called unfortunately but it worked. Might be worth investigating. Automatic Transmissions Dartford. 01322 222608

Well, just checked everything over. No slack in the belt, and the Power Steering reservoir is exactly filled to the mark. Checked all the hoses, and they are all OK. Amazingly, after turning the wheels lock to lock on a patch of nearby gravel, the rumbling has diminished, so I'll give it a day or two, and see what happens. Pagey, I'll look into an additive, and I'm also going to give a pal of mine a call. He is into hydraulics, and may well be able to fabricate me a new hose for a lot less than FMC will charge! It is, after all, only a hydraulic hose. Could be that I won't need it, but I'm sure his workshop could sort something out if required. Strange thing is that the wheels haven't been off the ground lately, but I DID hit a nasty pothole about a week ago with my nearside front wheel whilst on almost full lock, and it could have caused this. I'll keep you posted, and THANK YOU for your ideas.
