Overheating at speed(Ultima 16v Auto)M Plate

Hi All

I'm a newbie here and can only just manage to put petrol in and change the oil (Not particularly mechanically minded)

Anyhoo my problem is this

Recently bought a Scorpio Ultima 16v Auto on an M plate and everything seemed fine as I was pootling around town - the problem first started as soon as I hit the motorway - The car moved lovely and smoothly through the gears until I was going around 70-75 at which point i was in top (4th) the revs dropped down to about 2500rpm as though it was going into cruise mode but then shot straight back up to around 4000-4500rpm at this point speed is varying between 75-85 - it drops back to around 2500rpm at various points and then almost straight away shoots back up to 4000-4500

As this is going on the temp guage is slowly rising towards the red and only slowing down to about 50-60mph brings the temperature down to normal

I have read various posts on this site to try and identify what the problem may be and would appreciate any members advice

My own thoughts are that I will need to get the car scanned as maybe the VSS is faulty and if so where would anyone suggest getting a replacement (I have swapped the ECU already)

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Best Regards

Dirk, 2500rpm sounds about right for overdrive, if the revs are rising to over 4k at motorway speeds then it's changing down into second, hence the overheating problem. I'm thinking either the VSS or the throttle position sensor putting a kickdown signal through to the autobox, I'm not certain this is possible on the Scorpio. A bad VSS will affect other things like the speedo too.

Somebody else should be able to help more.

Regards, Bruce.
