2.3 Auto box problem ?

I seem to have a problem engaging reverse when the car is first started (sometimes takes upto 4 or 5 seconds). The car also seems sluggish for about half a mile. This has been happening for a couple months now....& I just put it down to the cold damp weather........ .....but today, I started it & put it in reverse & the car just stalled. Put in P, turned off engine & re-started. Put it in reverse & it stalled again. Repeated the whole procedure again & when putting in reverse again it didn't stall, but the engine felt like is was running on two cylinders & wanted to jump out of the car....turned it off & started it again & everything was fine The last time I had this kind of symptom was when I removed the IACV, cleaned it & put it back in.....can a dodgy IACV cause this problem ? The auto box oil is normal level & a good reddish colour, & when the car is warmed up she's smooth as silk. I'm hoping it is a problem with the IACV & not the auto box. Any advice would be very much appreciated

Jonny, I hate to say it mate but it sounds like the way mine went before it failed. Trouble engaging gear, struggling revs etc but I also had the BANG THUMP ( ) in and out of gear and started losing gears (more skipping, hesitating between gears) when warm. Strange thing is that I used to get the harsh changes and low idle when it was cold but smooth changes but hesitation in gear when it was warm...got far worse after I had it serviced in September 2005, my guess being that someone took it out and thrashed it, I learned NEVER to drive it hard when cold... The way Dave explained it was that most of these faults are down to fluid pressure, hence a fault clearing as it warms up, getting worse after you've been driving fast for a while or vanishing if you restart the engine. Hope it's something else mate Regards, Bruce.

I wish I'd tried this first, much cheaper than a new 'box.

The gearbox oil was changed a few months ago, although the garage said that they couldn't get it all out. The car feels fine after a few hundred yards & all the gear changes are very smooth. It's just a bit dodgy when first started, although I must admit, it doesn't behave badly everyday

Was the gearbox oil filter changed too? Could possibly be clogged and not allowing enough oil through until it warms up a bit

I was wondering the same Stuart, they said they changed the filter......but you never know with some of these back street mechanics I might get a specialist to have a look at it, & go from there.. Cheers for the advice everyone
