Gear box knocks only in 1st-2nd

Hi all, I had my gear box replaced last year but it still gives a kick between 1st and 2nd. Apparently there may be a re-programming needed. The people who did the job said they didn't have the equipment ? strange if they are supposed to be specialists!!!! Has anyone had same problem? and does anyone know who could do this in the Leeds/York area? local Ford dealer wasn't interested Cheers Ant

Have you checked the VSS? I had jerky gear changes and then noticed the speedo was reading low when the engine was cold. A new VSS cured both.

If the gearbox has been replaced recently it's probably OK. But it needs to be given the right instructions which is why the VSS and MAF need checking.

Hi Thank you for your reply I have cleaned the MAF but still no better. The VSS, can you tell me how hard these are to fit and how much they cost-would be a real help as I love the Scorpio and want it to perform as it should Many thanks in advance Anthony

Hi, the VSS is a small unit on the side of the gearbox and as far as I know is not difficult to get at or replace. Cost was around £55 a few months ago from a Ford main dealer.

Ant, I had my software done along with my 'new' autobox the other year, it was done in my case to update (change) the engine's behaviour for better fuel economy and idle (barely noticeable unless you're used to the car). The big question is what grade of autobox you had put in, was it a genuine recon with paperwork or just a lower mileage box from another car? VSS is a good place to look, another clue to this is as another poster said, if the speedo goes erratic, you lose overdrive etc. Other than that you could check the loom and think about getting fault codes read. | What does VSS actually stand for? is it a diaphram the same as fitted on the Granada?

Best way is to disconnect the MAF and see if limp home mode alters the fault at all . My gearbox woes weren't down to the MAF...I wish they were, way cheaper than a new autobox

Hi all, The gear box was fully re-built using new parts 'aparently'..i'm going to first replace the VSS as this doesn't seem expensive and see what happens. I'll let you know if this cures it. Many thanks for all info-will be trying everything

Ant, I notice the last car in your sig with great interest May be worth unplugging the MAF to put the engine into limp home mode and see if this changes the fault. Pull the codes too....you never know, it might just be an out of range solenoid Regards, Bruce.
