Hello everybody
After my old 2.0 DOHC died last week i got me 1995 V6 2.9 Ultima 12v Motd and legal
I have a few concerns that I hope some of you may help with
1) Engine temperature seems to be eratic sometimes normal then dipping down to just above the blue level with the heater matrix never reaching full heat. I will try to see if the matrix is blocked but anything else i could check
2)climate control, I did the reset got a code 52, the problem i get is that the a/c comes on whenever it feels like it even if its not set on screen position and also the blower motor takes on whatever speed it fancies, the dial is not representive of the motor speed
3)Fuel economy, so far on half a tank I have done 100 miles!very light foot, this is a mix of town and dual carriageway with 15 mile trips it just doesnt seem right to expect 200 miles to 70 litres of fuel
I have given it a full service as the old plugs were black when they came out and i hope to get a code reader to diagnose any problems
Also anybody know if the rear springs and shocks are the same as the 2.0 dohc 92 model as I had just done this job on my now dead car and was hoping to take them out and put em on the ultima

#1 Check your thermostat. I could be wide open (it should be closed when the engine is cold)
#2 and 3 must be answered by someone else

Hello and welcome to the site  . To your problems:
1: Sounds like classic airlock symptoms, matrix could be connected but it's more likely blocked after all this time. Could also be the temperature sender playing around. Check top hose when you start the engine and see if it warms straight away...if it does then the thermo is stuck...
2:I haven't had to touch the cc on my car (luckily ), somebody should be able to help you though.
3: This could be down to 1 if there's a thermo or temp sender fault telling the ECU it's on cold and running the engine rich. There could be other reasons too...throttle position sensor among others.
Not sure about the springs...my gut feeling is no but I'll leave that to somebody else.

Have you topped up your half tank to make sure you are getting the correct reading/usage?
Dont go by the fuel gauge or the trip computer

The AC will cut in whenever the system measures a high humidity and is needed to dry out the air. At the end of the day, that is what AC is for (as well as keeping up cold in the summer).

Dont think so Ian, the AC is either on or off, it doesnt detect humidity it just removes it constantly while its on.
Default setting for the climate control is on when the engine is started although the green AC dash light does not illuminate

#1 sounds exactly like a previous fault on mine and a few others, it's the temp sender that causes it and is easily and cheaply changed.

re. the temp reading (sensor) mine does the same - sometimes normal, sometimes right down low. I used to worry about it now I don't.
What I do worry about is losing all the coolant through a burst pipe - happened 3 times on my old Scorp (did do 340k miles though).
There appears to be a dashboard light to tell you if the coolant drops below "min" BUT on the later versions they removed the sensor. I bought a new sensor - only about a tenner - and wired it to the "lo-screen wash" wiring (to save messing with the dashboard).
I have a slow coolant leak which I love as every month or so the "lo-screen wash" light comes on first thing in the morning to tell me that my "coolant level sensor" is still working.
Best thing to do is buy a new coolant header tank at the same time - that's about a tenner too - cos' the float thingy is probably gummed up by now.

I had the same problem with the temperature gauge and I eventually traced it to the engine multi-plug. Look down by the off side inner wing, there is a small black box into which all of the engine cables go with a bolt head visible on top. Undo that bolt and it should pull the mult-plug apart as it unscrews. I found a small amount of oxididation on some of the contacts. Sprayed both halves with WD40, plugged and unplugged it a few times and it fixed that problem. It also seemed to improve the idle and the fuel consumption too, though I cannot be sure as I was busy with lots of other tests and checks at the same time.
For a big engine, it warms up remarkably quickly. A mile or two at this time of year should see the guage settled on normal and perfectly horizontal.
Like all cars, consumption will be heavy on short trips. Try it on a motorway at 80 it should do around 30+.
For a code reader look up my comments on putting together what is known as the Star reader. I described fully what I had done, where I got the bits and there cost - back in October 2006. Also check out the main web site for the Star.
Cost is about £20 some pounds and you can keep it ready to use in your glove box at a minutes notice at the side of the road if necessary.
