Flashing Overdrive light

I was driving along the motorway this morning when I noticed the green overdrive off light flashing away.I pushed the button in and then pushed it again and the car responded as it should but the light just kept on flashing.I continued and drove the 30 or so miles and got home with the light still flashing away,I turned off the car and restarted it and the light was no more,I pushed the button in, light came on,pushed it again light went out,all seems to be normal now.Is there something lurking ready to go bang or is it something simple.Anyone had this.?Roy. Huh

VSS can do this if its failing, hows the speedo?
Might benefit from an oil and filter change.

i had this on a 24v for a few weeks and it cleared itself, just the occasional flashing and the very odd time jumping out of gear.. I think it might need the oil changed

I've had this problem twice on my previous 2.0 '96 auto.

When I say twice, I mean leading up to both the occasions when I had to have the autobox reconditioned (although, on the second occasion I opted to sell it instead - well it had done 340k miles)

The symptoms gradually appeared as follows (same each time):

1. Changing a little to jerkily from 1st to 2nd (this would prompt the FLASHING O/D LIGHT - which could be cancelled by switching the ignition off and on)

2. Taking longer to engage reverse gear.

3. Refusing to change from 2nd to 3rd - although i discovered that by pushing the revs up to 3750 it would change (but then there was a further trick to get it to go into 4th and fifth)

4. Once I'd got it above 2nd it could be driven normally so long as I didn't drive it in 2nd or 1st for more than about 10-15 seconds.

5. Eventually, reverse would not engage at all without increasing the revs - scarier and SCARIER - BANG!! However, following the 10 second rule in 4. above could avoid this - takes a bit of planning. After a while I learnt to look out for subtle slopes so any necessary reversing could be done using gravity. You can imagine how stressful this could be for a private hire driver - lol.

When I couldn't stand it any longer, I got it reconditioned and it was fine. It had started to give trouble around 125k miles and I hung out until 175k before giving in. The reconditioned box lasted a similar time but since the car had done 340k by this time I deemed it time for us to part.

Sorry to be so long-winded but the sequence was exactly repeated each time and I guess you may get the same thing and find this helpful.

It's amazing what memories the term "flashing green light" sets off.
