How much?How long?

Right, after taking opinions etc and reading up on this i'm pretty certain that it is my chain guides that are causing the noise and these will need renewing. Haven't had it looked at to confirm this but all the symptoms fit including the oil feed problem to the head(Bits of guides blocking oil flow to head). My question is how long would it take a garage who knew what they're doing to change the guides? This will give me an idea as to whether its viable or to start prepping a 2nd hand engine and swap the engine. Budget is very tight so really can't even afford to waste what budget i've got on expolartory work(Which for this fault would mean stripping down the engine). It's crunch time gents, don't want to drive the car too much in this state but need a car for everyday use so have to find a solution. Budget could possibly stretch to £900. But then we're in the just use that to get another car territory!
Guy.

It might be worth seeing if anyone has a known good secondhand engine,  that would be my thinking if I were in this situation  Undecided

Dave, you're spot on and i'm enquiring about that at the moment. If anyone knows of or maybe has one going cheap and near to Birmingham/West Midlands i'm probably going to be in the market. How long to swap engines over? As i'm going to have to budget that into the costs of buying and transporting the engine to mine(6 miles West of Wolves).

I think it's risky with the second engine, you can't know how much the chains are worn, so it may end up on the next winter rattling like the current one. I also have a terrible rattle...sometimes even for 30-60 seconds....(when it's sub zero temperature). For now I'm using a pre-lubing kit, but i plan of changing all of them in the summer.

The point about the engine is true, to expand on my point I would only get an engine off a member on here, who will be far more trustworthy than a random seller on the Internet.

A member on here who is breaking a car will likely have at least driven it before breaking. I remember Bertie (Simon) broke a 24v recently which had a pretty low milage engine which was clean and quiet, he sold that for a good price to another member IIRC.

Guy, it might be worth asking tintin about the 24v he is breaking  Smiley
