HELP! Awful, loud cluncking/grinding from fr

This one came out of nowhere! Parked it up last night - fine. Got in it this morning- horrendous 'clunking'/ dull clanging/grinding type sound coming from under the front of the car as I went to pull away. It was that bad that the first thing I checked was the wheel nuts. It sounded like something major was going to fall off! It is worse the more the steering wheel is turned, but happens even if it is straight. I have checked the power steering rack bolts - they're tight, but only been able to visually inspect the suspension/steering components- nothing obvious. I dare not even move it now it's that bad. I'm thinking, how can a noise so bad not be obvious? Anyone out there shed any light/got any ideas? Obviously grateful for all replies - especially as it is my only car. Thanks, John (1995, 2.0, 16v, manual, Ultima Estate)

The big question is does it happen with the car standing still (idling) and does it increase with revs? First thoughts: Power steering, wheel bearing no doubt someone with more knowledge than I will be along to help Regards, Bruce.

It doesn't happen when the car is just idling and it doesn't sound like it's from the engine. Air con one is interesting. I'll have to investigate.

Check the power steering fluid, if it's low it may be leaking out into the bellows as has happened to people before Seems like that to me, if car idles ok then it can't be in the engine.

Have you looked under the car. Not as daft as it sounds, because the other morning I set off to work, and the car was running fine (apart from ongoing idling problems), and then all of a sudden, and within spitting distance from home, there was this horrendous noise from under it. Pulled in, and there was this humungous chunk of branch wedged up under the front n/s wishbone. Where the hell it came from I still don't know, other than that with the very high winds we've been having, it must have blown under there during the night when it was parked up. Took me a good ten minutes to remove it. It certainly wasn't on the road, as I would have seen it. Might be worth a look.

SOLVED !! It was a broken coil spring! Sheared right through. That's a first for me, but another one to put down to experience. Now I know the noise, and the cause of it, it'll probably never happen to me again, so I thought I share the info with you incase someone else on the forum can benefit from it. Thanks for all your suggestions anyway. Nice to know there's a good support network out there. John
