Idle problems

Hello

I'm looking for some advise for the idling problems that my Dad has with his 2.0 16v Scorpio. The idling problem is difficult to describe.

The garage he uses doesn't seem to have fixed the problem even after changing what I believe to be the wiring loom and coil packs, so is there anything I/he can try ? (We are not mechanically minded). He has contacted the mechanic and he suggested replacing the ignition leads ? Is this same as HT leads ? I went into Halfords last night and checked the HT leads book and it indicated that there are 2 HT leads, where are these located ?

I was going to try some fuel system cleaner to see if this makes a difference.

Thanks in advance ...

hi there

did they clean out the idle control valve? a good clean with carb cleaner and then a few drops of oil on the shaft sometimes works wonders.

you can see it in this photo. it's just above and to the left of the oil filler cap in the photo (next to the air intake on the throttle body on the car). it's 2 bolts and a plug.

try that first as the ht leads are secondary leads of the coilpacks.

Also have a read of THIS and clean the MAF. This unit is reponsible for much of the running quality of the car and can cause various defects to appear.  If you want to check the leads just run the car in the dark with the cover off and if there are sparks or flashes around the leads they are duff. Welcome to the site. Smiley The leads are situated under the black plate secured by 10 bolts on the top of the engine. The two coil packs are under there, each sitting on a plug and with a lead connecting to the other plugs. It would also help to indicate where you are situated as there may well be a member near you who might be able to help or even run a scan for faults.
