Smells like rotton eggs

I've noticed recently that my windscreen washers smell of rotton eggs... Taking the washer cap off & having a sniff nearly blew my head off..... It won't be a problem draining the washer tank, but I was wondering what actually causes the smell ? Is it stagnent water or cheap screenwash ? It really does smell like something has died in there

the smell is a 'by product' of bacteria, normally from stagnant water, i've had this recently with some of the buses i drive. you could try an anti bacterial fluid in it, what im not sure, maybe milton or steriliser for home brew? but make sure its not damaging to paintwork etc, otherwise i think its a case of flush it out......

The water can't be stagnant... Being a taxi.....I use it many times everyday/night & as a consequence have to refill it quite often. It's only in the past month that it's really started to smell.....actually, come to think of it......ever since I bought that screen wash from Tesco (own brand). Still got some left & just had a sniff of the bottle.......smells like eggs mixed with isopropynol I think I may have found the source

Yes it's the screenwash. Not just Tesco's either. I had this problem too. VILE stuff these days. Smells like a cat's p*****d in the tank. I've gone back to using plain water with a little white vinegar in it. Cuts through grease and road film instantly. Works 100% and handy if you stop for Fish & Chips.

Yes "she who must be obeyed" has this smell in her Escort washer bottle, tried all sorts to remove but its still there, may try the plain water and vinegar next but smell removal first.

Often happens if the mixture is to weak. Also happens if you use rain water.
