battery/alternator

hi all,
have had my scorpio 2.9 v6 off the road for the last 6months as i bought a vectra 2.5
the vectra was not for me so i have gone back to the scorpio.
it has sat for six months doing nothing the battery was as dead as a dodo after charging it the car started no problems .
i have had it running for about a week no problems until yesterday on trying to start the scorpio i just got a clicking noise from the starter motor after getting a jump start the car started no problem
whilst it was running i checked the battery via the milage reset stalk it was reading 14.0- 14.1v
on stopping the car i just got the clicking noise from the starter
checking the battery again i got a reading of 12v which dipped to 11 and then 10 whilst operating windows lights etc .
just been back out to the car and it is showing 9.2v
the red battery light comes on but then goes out with the rest of the warning lights so does that mean i can rule out the alternator not charging the battery.
i have been to the local scrappy and got a battery from them when i jump the car from this battery it starts no problem.
the battery i got from the scrappy is 12v 43ah 330a it was the only fully charged one he had would i be able to install this battery in the scorp until i can get a proper rated one (12v 72ah 680a)
or am i just asking for trouble i havent a clue what all these figures mean
many thanks in advance of your replies

hi there

thick you'd be asking for a breakdown, if you fitted the small battery.

scorpio's require a lot of power to start. best to get a big battery asap.

It might just about hack it as a (very) temporary replacement, but only if the weather remains good and you keep the loading down to a minimum - get a proper replacement ASAP.

12v 72a 680a means - 12volts, all these days are 12volts

72 amp hour, which means it can deliver 1amp for 72 hours or 72amps for 1 hour before being completely flat.

680amps as a maximum instantaneous discharge. In other words this is the absolute maximum current it is able to supply to crank your engine over - more than double that of your temprorary battery and double the amp hour capacity too. Both needed if the battery and engine are cold.

Hi, get a battery from Ford...not the cheapest but will last for yonks.

With the Vectra, no it's not going to compare to the Scorp - just as much as I like my Mondeo it's nowhere to the Scorp either - more economical and reliable but nowhere for ride, handling or comfort.

Sounds like you have got a battery for a Metro or the likes. When I bought mine the correct battery was not fitted, used to get the flicking needles and poor cranking, and most times your problem.I bought the correct battery and never had a problem since. As previously mentioned you do need a good battery, especially at this time of year.Roy Wink
