Is my engine DEAD?

Hi all, bad things have happened.
Last night driving down motorway the engine juddered and smoked then lost all power and started missfiring. 40 min later friendly AA man confirmed it was running on 3 cylinders b****r! he mentioned that it could be a dropped valve but obviously without looking he's just guessing. So got towed home and started to think .
About a week previously i started the car and it sounded terrible, so i took the rocker cover off and found one of the pushrods had come out! so i replaced it and tightened them up . I will have a look in the morning and see if anything is amiss.
Any words of wisdom would be VERY appreciated Huh

Just took the rocker cover off and one of the push rods has come out again! this time on a different cylinder. It has also snapped one side of the metal strap that holds the rocker in place. I suppose this is good news in a way (i thought a cylinder was trashed!) any thoughts why this keeps happening?
cheers

this is a trait of the vm engine, but i dont know what the cause is, other than that they're pretty bullet proof.
steve savill (07761246096) a breakers in essex has a couple of td engines in if you need bits, one of which has only done 73k, im going over there monday. quite a few people on here slate steve cos of his prices which are more expensive than getting bits from members on here, but, you have to remember its he's business not a hobby, i've always had good deals from him and he's always open to offers....

I'm guessing, but I'd say that the push-rod is coming out because the hydraulic tappet beneath it isn't extending to take up the clearance.  If that's the case then either it's a faulty tappet, or there's a problem with oil flow to it.

Either way I don't envy you as I think the head has to come off to replace the tappet (hope I'm wrong).  Having said that, running some engine flush through and then changing the oil to 15W-40 or thinner may help - I assume it's not running on 20W-50?  Wink

Went down to my local FMD today for a laugh, the bloke was actually quite helpful. I explained what had happened with the aid of my diagram (thanks to this site) he said it could be one of several things and without looking etc etc, anyway i went next door to the parts department and low and behold they didn't have any and couldn't get any . So it looks like i will be scouring the salvage yards for some replacement bits? will keep you posted

Well Rover used the same engine in the 800 series so you could try a Rover dealer...  ROFL

Seriously, the VM engine was used in many cars including old Range Rovers, the Vauxhall Frontera, Jeep Cherokee, Rover 800, etc, etc.  Many of the newer applications used direct injection so the heads were different, but I think they all used pushrod OHV technology (no need for anything else being as they don't rev that high).

There's also a "VM specialist" in Chesterfield; do a web search and you should find their site - no idea how good they are though, last time I rang they didn't want to give me any info over the phone but wanted me to leave the car with them (and pay for it of course!).
