have not heard of breaks in the actual metal, but some owners some time ago did report of breaks in the wires that supply the power to the rear lights, this was where the wires run along the inside of the boot, usually where the boot "arms" (the bits that hold the boot to the car) are, what was happening was they were being "chaffed" when the boot was being opened/closed

Chieftan, do you mean 'Tailgate'? ie: is it an Estate because the rear lights are not in the tailgate. If you mean the boot lid ie: a saloon, as Craig says there is a known problem with the boot hinge, offside, catching the loom and fracturing the cables. You may have to remove some of the 'wrapping' to identify the damaged wire ,if that is the problem.

If there is no supply to that lamp then its a good bet that the wire has been fractured. You need to check as suggested by Craig and myself. The wiring diagram is available HERE. It says |Sierra BUT it IS Scorpio.

Also, try wiggling the multiplug. My left tail light seems to go out at will, but comes back after some wiggling
