You need to check the oil level with the car at normal running temperature. I also read that you move the gearshift  back and forth a couple of times with the engine running. My autobox level was low recently and I suffered a delay before drive engaged in both forward and reverse gears.
cheers

ive just checked the auto gearbox oil, i warmed engine up, moved the gear stick through all gears a couple of times and the oil was covering all the bottom plastic part of the dipstick? the oil is red, clean and smells quiet new and there is plenty of gearbox oil, but it still will not go into reverse?...im worried now...

may need your bands tightened a little, have you noticed it takin a while to select reverse before this happened?

the car had a gearbox rebuild by a gearbox engineer 2 years ago (£400)and the maff was replaced 18 months ago as it would not select o/d?. so the maf wires need a squirt with carb cleaner then you think?. thanks.

possibley, i had this problem with mine after having the box completely reconditioned, you really need to get it pluged in and checked, it might be something simple, where are you in the country?

Does it go into  reverse if you rev the engine slightly when reverse is selected.

If so could either be a sticking solenoid or the bands need tightening as previously stated.

YES always try the easy things first.
The MAF is crucial with regards the engine managment and the ECU  controls the gear box.
