fans not running at all

Hi,

I have just checked the cooling system and found that my problem are the fans which dont run at all. This might explain why the temperature is going up in idle (see other topic). I checked the website and it says there are a lot of thing to check including the ECT. Is it worth doing an OBD test? What do I have to look after when testing (I would have to do it in a garage)? The car is still my '96 2.9 cossie.

hi there

does you fans run with the a/c on or not at all? make sure the a/c compressor is running.

hi
the fans run with a/c on i presume on full speed (when i measure the voltage on one of the fans it has 13.8v) - once a/c is turned off a few seconds later the fans turn off.

hi there

i'm lost now. Huh

you've put as your problem that the fans are not running. on your other post, you say the "my temperature indicator is jumping down once the motor is in normal temperature", so it's not over heating. so why do you want the fans to run?

the fans will only run if....
1. engine is too hot (fast mode)
2. a/c is on (slow mode)
3. a/c is on but engine is too hot (fast mode)
4. a/c has a pressure issue (fast mode)

maybe i'm picking this up wrongly (wouldn't be the first time Wink)

btw, you can check the temp from the dash. the fans should come on about 65 there abouts (can't remember exactly)

hey

sorry i'm confused meself.
ok back to my original problem: the temperature
the temperature indicator was jumping down intermittently as the first issue, but now it has changed to go up in idle and when waiting at traffic lights as well (as far as to the upper white on the tem gauge) which is worrying me even more.

I found that the fans are not running even when the temp goes up - it was at 55 lowest (hot!) when reading the dash.

so let's go from here - I've tried to narrow the problem down but from here I don't know more than you..lost

Hope that brings a bit light into it

hi there

that's a bit clearer. all i can think of are....

faulty ect. see this and this.
air lock. check with the cap off and the car facing up hill. see if there's any air bubbles.

check the fan relay. big green one on the inner wing. check the multi-plug pins.

Hey, thats what I thought. ok let's look at the ect. I will replace the fan relay with a known good one also. Where is the exact location for the ect? On the page it doesn't say where the little thing is?

hi there

i think it's on the right hand side of the engine as you look into it. low down, maybe easier to get to it from underneath. Undecided
