Help please anyone! 2.3 ultima, purchased after head gasket failure (new gkt fitted), when got home overheated, fan relay and split inlet manifold, replaced all and cut-off loom, and more recently fuel tank.....thinking she's ready took in for mot, failed on high idle 12500 and emmisions..checked for air leak could not find anything, spent 60.00 with main dealer today they could not find cause...but, they suggested rechecking manifold and the fact that the ecu would only go 75% of the way thru self tests (they dont know why!)..
Drives ok but cannot idle in drive or reverse without hunting...i have just stripped off manifold etc cleaned up and reassembled meticulously...still revs at 12500, no noises obvious (Ford tech said he could hear high pitched whistle)..........Any advise greatly appreciated

OK, HAVE CHECKED ALL VACUUM PIPES INC 'T' PIECE, SWOPPED AND CLEANED IACV, CLAMPED OFF EGR PIPE, CHECKED ALL EVAP PIPES, SWOPPED CAM SENSOR, RESET TPS BY DISCONNECTING BATTERY ETC, NOTHING SEEMS TO CHANGE ENGINE NOTE OR IDLE RPM. FORD TESTED HEGO SENSOR BUT I AM CONSIDERING CHANGING ANYWAY, CLEANED THROTTLE BODY AND MAF, SPARK PLUGS LOOK FINE AND HAS NEW COILS....IS THER ANYTHING EXHAUST SIDE OF BLOCK (HAVEN'T DISTURBED THIS SIDE) THAT I NEED CHECK?......I AM NOW AT THE POINT OF REPLACING EEC1V ETC BUT DON'T WANNA DO THAT UNTIL EXHAUSTED ALL OTHER AVENUES

a long shot, but check the idle control valve is on the right way round, a garage had put mine back on back-to-front, caused the throttle to "stick" at about 1500rpm every rev (although mine dropped after 10 secs). that was on a cossie.....

visual check to the pics on the sight?

hi there

yep, cruise control module is behind the driver's headlight. the cable needs to be put on correctly.

ok, now don't think i have TC, i have released and reset throttle cable and during idle the cruise cable is slack at quandrant so i don't think its holding up throttle, what i have noticed is that the idle is lower with TPS by about 100 rpm, i have disconnected battery and TPS to re-synch it but still 1200 idle. Thanks a lot

hi there

you could try taking the tps off the throttle body, but leave it connected. can't remember if it has a gasket or not. see if that does anything. Undecided

As usual your advise has been excellent, having given up personally as i cannot do wiring/sensor tests, i have given car to a Specialist here in Norwich Clive Atthowe. Along with copies of all your advise re TPS Scorpio-man, did check under Iacv Solarpanel but probably not well enough i will recheck.
Thanks again for all input guys i will keep you informed.

Collected car from specialist, could not fault electronics/sensors etc, following vacuum checks at idle it is suggested valve timing out...
Possible that person who replaced head gasket did not recheck timing on reassembly..
Guess what i'm doing weekend!
Keep you informed

At last a resolve.......stripped top cover off and cam plate, left camshaft (exhaust) 1 tooth out, after checking three times i was lucky enough to pull off pulley and move cam enough to prevent renewal of tensioner etc........Happy yes but not impressed with FMD having told #em disconnection of CPS was the only thing that made a difference they never concidered checking timing..
I now have an MOT certificate.
Thanks again all
