on my hunt round the car to get my tacho, ( sorry rev counter to some) ive found two push fit diodes, one in aux fuse box and one in engine bay down by the coil anybody got any ideas

They're to protect the electronics from the pulse generated when the magnetic field collapses. Usually these are used on large inductive loads which are switched electronically so one for the coil sounds probable, and I think the a/c compressor has one too. Darren
