Fuel Level & 2007 RDS CD Changer

Hi all, I have a 1996 2.0l 16V Ultima Estate - great car it is too - has given me 50K of miles so far with very few problems - touch wood! A few problems recently though- 1. The fuel level shown by the instrument panel tells the truth most of the time and then all of a sudden drops and makes you think you need to refuel when of course you dont - there is still fuel in the car! Is it the float or a sensor that records the level of fuel. How much would it be to replace? 2. The 2007 RDS 6 CD Changer appears to have given up the ghost but everything else with the radio works fine. The CDs just dont want to play. I want to be able to play a CD or maybe move into the future and link an mp3 player with it? What is the easiest and cheapest thing to do. I dont mind which - CD or mp3 - just so that I can play my own music and not listen to the radio 24/7! It is an excellent sound when it is working! Also how the hell do you get the blasted thing out ! I almost broke my hand just trying to feel for the cables that connect to it! Ideally I would like to do a straight swap with a second hand changer IF they are easy to get hold off. Of course, NOT from ford, you need a mortgage to get some of the components from ford! Many thanks everyone - long live the scorpio - why dont ford make a new one?!

i dont know about replacing the fuel sensor but if you hold in the odometer reset button for i think 5 seconds it goes into a service mode, then each time you press the button it'll display different information i.e. battery voltage, air temperature etc, one of them is the exact fuel amount in litres. as for the cd changer, in what way doesnt it work? have you cleaned the lens with a cd lens cleaner? this is often all it needs.

To remove the CD Changer see HERE Could be it's just a loose or dodgy connection on either the back of the radio unit, or at the autochanger. Certainly worth checking. There is another reason that CD's will not play. Have you put the CD's into the holder upside down? You wouldn't be the first, and it's dead easy done. The label side doesn't play too well!! As far as the gauge goes, I'd use the Fuel Computer. Far more accurate. The gauges on the Scorpios seem to have minds of their own at times. Probably just a bad earth somewhere.

There is a known problem with the wiring to the CD changer. You need to access the wiring as indicated by Spannerdemon and then remove the outer 'tape' round the loom. Some models had a problem with a joint not being properly made and a re-solder can solve it. IIRC the affected joint is only a few inches down the loom.

| Don't laugh-I just bought a newish Mondeo which believe it or not is actually as big as the Scorpio.Although I've gone from a 24v Ultima to an LX the Mondeo isn't all that different inside. I'm sure the top of the range version would have all the bells and whistles such as heated seats that I had (but never used!) in my Cossie. The trouble with both the Scorpio and the Mondeo is that they were both class leaders but sported the wrong badge.I remember on Top Gear when Jeremy Clarkson said the Mondeo was a better car than the BMW or Audi but nobody would believe him.Mind you he also said the Scorpio was the ugliest car going (perhaps the Audi TT and the VW Bug weren't around then) yet how many cars these days have borrowed its styling?

| I had a brand new Mondeo hire car from work about a month ago (top of the range) and yes it had all the toys we are used to in the scorp, now you come to mention it it was around the same size Rich
