Odd temperature guage

Hi all Just noticed this one yesterday, my temperature guage seems to be acting strangely. When the car is running and has reached normal temperature the temperature guage seems to drift downwards or move rapidly between normal and cold when the car is not moving. As soon as one starts moving again it goes back to normal. There are no other problems - water level is normal and the car is not acting oddly in any other way. Therefore since it's not possible for a car to go cold while its running (is it?) would I be correct in assuming that there's simply something wrong with the guage? Or is this pointing to something wrong with the car? Cheers Penguin

Could be a faulty temp guage sender. Mine did a similar thing recently, luckily I had a spare to put in & it solved the problem. They're about £13.00 from FMD

hi there i'd think it was the temp gauge sensor, but didn't you have the head gasket changed recently? i'd watch it for a week or two (unless you have done already), in case it was a wee bit of air, but it's more than likely the sensor. while it's playing up, use the trip reset on the dash to watch the temp figures. you only lose a bit of coolant changing it (on the 2.3, anyway).

Thank you! Yes I did have the gasket changed recently. I only saw this happening on Friday so I'll watch it and see what happens. I take it's the sensor if the problem doesn't go away and an air in the system if it does? Also how do I use the trip switch to see the figures? Cheers Penguin

Hold the trip reset button in until it beeps. Then press it a few times until you reach enG t. The figures don't relate to the actual temparature, but the opposite. The lower the figure the higher the engine temp & vice-versa. The range should be between 79 - 129 for normal engine temp

Thanks for all your help. I reset the clocks and the problem does not seem to have come back since. Let's hope that's the end of it. Cheers Penguin
