Top gear

Intermittently for the last week, the car either refuses to select top gear, or changes immediately back into third gear if I increase and then decrease pressure on accelerator.

I've looked on the Fault Finder and the most likely possibility is: "Won't select upper gears: Refuses to engage higher gears? also speedo needle jumps or stays at 0? YES: 1. VSS sensor faulty 2. Wiring loom fault
".

However, the speedo needle does not jump. Any ideas, please?

Hi there, from the description of your profile i see that you are talking about a 2.3  The first thing to start with will be the cleaning of the Mass Air Flow sensor or in short MAF. The procedure is here In most of the cases this MAF is crucial for optimum gearbox changes.

Hi Octavian_P,

Thanks for the advice. Tried cleaning the MAF wires. I think it has improved. However, it's still not staying in overdrive for long. As soon as I depress the accelerator slightly, the revs increase by 1,000 approx. I'm wondering if it could be the accelerator assembly sticking slightly. Is that possible?

Are you referring to the MAF connector ?

In this article here the third picture shows the maf internal sensors. Are they clean or they are blackened.

The MAF internal sensors as in the 3rd photo. They are now clean.
