As per title.. its stuck... right round at the maximum.

It happened when the needles all spun round through having a dead battery.
But the speedo one won't come back.

I know someone had this problem before. Long time ago though. How do I fix it?  Huh

Hi,

Remove clock set, turn it upside down and thump it !  Not too hard LOL, then if it returns freely refit it all. Switch ignition on before putting all the trim back in, in case it sticks again.

Fist things fist ... HAVE you tried a reset ! i.e. going through the dashboard check things using the trip button and then switching off and then back on , That can sometimes free it off.

hi there

ford says not to turn it up side down.

easiest way is to take off the 'wooden' surround,
then the 4 screws to the dash 'glass'.

reset the dash again and replace everything.

I haven't done the dash diagnostic thing, no.

All I've done so far is disconnect & reconnect the battery to get them flicking.

Oh, and I've given the dash top a technical whack too  Wink

I'll try the reset in the morning. Then I guess its off with the 'wood'

Hi all, I've got a scorpio 2Lt 1995 mod. i've got a prob with the speedo not working. When batt removed and reconected the needles on both the speedo & rev-counter flick & come to rest but when driving speedo don't work. Having looked through the other postings I took it that the V.S.S was not working. Having change this unit it speedo still not working. Is there a way of testing the unit or is it a matter of change unit & hope 4 the best? I'd like to take the car 4 a drive it's past the M.O.T but these probs have croped up. Any & all advice would be very helpfull. Ragnor33 (newboy) (Not only to the forum but to scorpios as well)

@Ragnor
Could very well be loom problems. There is a set of wires going from the VSS on the gearbox, and up along side the engine, left hand side when looking from the front. I had to change these on mine (Speedo and reverse lights were dead). Got a second hand one off a member here. Takes half an hour to change.

Check if your reversing lights work, if not, then all my bets are on that loom.

It could still be the loom, but just less likely. If you have the tools, you can get underneath and use a multimeter on the loom, to check for continuity. If you disconnect both ends, you could try grounding one side and put the meter on the other side. That won't uncover poor insulation, but it should uncover continuity problems.

Hi Ragnor, is it an auto? bad signal from the VSS will also mess up gearchanges so if it's an auto and it's changing gear ok, your problem lays elsewhere in the circuit. Could even be a fault in the instrument cluster but it's an expensive thing to change, even second hand. As Kjetil says though, it could be a wiring problem - your is an early car and the looms are prone to becoming brittle and damaged with age.

If you can get hold of a scope, you could check for the square wave signal the VSS sends at the ECU, this would mean both the sensor and loom were working ok.

Good luck.

Regards, Bruce.

I think you will find it is stuck behind the pin at minimum rather than maximum.

The pin stop is a flexible plastic and what worked once for me was to drive it, giving the top of the dash a good thump at speed.
