I have a 1995 Ultima with the semi electronic (4ALDE) auto transmission box and am using a lot of fluid with no apparent leaks. What diagnostic steps can I take to try and ascertain why this is happening.

Hi, I assume that your car is a 12 valve or very early 24 valve. If so change the vacuum modulator on the side of the gearbox, (just above the pan rail drivers side). They leak internally and auto oil gets sucked into the engine inlet and burned, thus no visible leaks. Make sure you dont drop the little pin when you do the job. regards Dave

Fully electronic A4LDE or partially electronic A4LDe ? The former equips all models except the 12V version which got the A4LDe carried over from Granada Mk3. If the latter, the vacuum modulator is a prime suspect, especially if there is smoke through the exhaust when accelerating. "Nothing is created, either in the operations of art or in those of nature, and it may be considered as a general principle that in every operation there exists an equal quantity of matter before and after the operation; that the quality and quantity of the constituents is the same, and that what happens is only changes, modifications." Hi, My diagnosis was based on "semi electronic", this Unit was fitted to all 12V Scorpio's and a few very early 24V ones. There is no such thing as a "fully electronic" A4LDE the correct designation for this fully elecrtronic Transmission is the "4R44E" The engine smoke usually only manifests itself briefly when accellerating after decellerating down a hill for instance......... | You are right, vacuum is strongest when decelerating with closed throttle. Quote: There is no such thing as a "fully electronic" A4LDE the correct designation for this fully elecrtronic Transmission is the "4R44E" |
| A4LDE and 4R44E are one and the same (and 4R55E for that matter). Cheers, Mike
