I have the 1995 2.9 12 valve Ultima and have been using Chevron fully synthetic 5w40 motor oil changed at intervals of 5000 miles. I hvae now discovered that the Ford reccomendation is Ford Motor Oil SAE10W30API/SH/CDEC. Is the Chevron Ok ?

I use Duckhams SAE 5/40 in my 2.9 12v. Never had any trouble with it. Change my oil and filter every 3500/4000 miles whatever it's like. I used to build engines for a living, and know the value of always running with clean oil. Saves a lot of repair bills. Bear in mind that Ford will always recommend their own oil which is fair enough. The Chevron oil you're using exceeds the Ford spec anyway, so no problem.

I've been using the Chevron oil for several years now with no ill effects. I agree with Spannerdemon in that it exceeds the Ford spec so has to be ok. As for clean oil... for sure and LPG keeps it very clean!! Sorry Baz did I say LPG Just to keep you real happy... 37.9p a litre up here. Thunderchild

If the car runs well with the actual oil, and as Thunderchild says the oil is over ford specifications, it'll be a pity to change to other brand. The cleanest way of keeping an engine is to use the same oil every time to avoid counter effects of mixing different oil / types.
