Gearbox Oil Cooler Pipe Leak?
« on: Jun 17th, 2007, 5:41pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Just back from trip out and noticed oil spots on the wet drive.

There is oil on the undertray at front LHS - I think it's gearbox fluid.

Is this likely to be an oil cooler pipe/hose leak??

Is this common?

Thanks

Very common , check the colour of the oil if it is redish will probably be autobox cooler pies.
Think mine were about £80 - £90 for both pipes. But this was for the cossie 2.9

I had an oil leak from a pipe on the oil cooler and had to change the cooler.
You will see more when you take the undertray down.

Hi John, long time no see  Grin

Yep the cooler pipes are bad for rusting just under the radiator.
Or, it may be where the oil pipes go into the coolant radiator?
the oil cooling radiators are bad for cracking where the inlet/outlet pipes are connected, most of the ones i remove break here when i try to remove the pipes.
or it may just be running along the undertray from somewhere else Smiley

Its booked into the local garage for Wednesday.  Looks to be red fluid (i.e. gearbox fluid) and as far as I can see the connections into the cooler are fine (until the garage removes the pipes).  Its all messy round the bottom lh corner by the rad so I'm fairly certain its the pipes.

Probe off the road as well as rear anti roll bar drop links have failed and one brake pad disintegrating (overheated?) all of which I fouind when trying to sort the binding rear brakes.

One day I'll have a NEW car  Huh Huh

Hi Stuart, I'm still around but we've been in USA for a spell, all cars have gone to pot 'cause I'm too busy to do anything on them, the Scorpio is growing moss!!

I replaced the short pipe from cooler to main rad with a new one which was £26 from FMD, when the long one from box to cooler started leaking I cut the bad section out using a plumbers pipe cutter and fitted a piece of 9mm petrol pipe between the two parts with 2 jubilee clips either end and this has been fine for the last few months, cost about £5 tops

I had a leak from the cooler pipes and replaced them entirely but in my case it wasn't corrosion but vibration fracture at the unions near the auto box. The pipes are poorly supported and thus subject to vibration.

BEWARE THE HIGHLANDER HARBINGER OF DOOM!!!!

Just been down to pick up the car and there's a new oil cooler on the bench and the car up in the air - yes Stuart the cooler connections failed when they removed the pipes!!!!!!!  £170 for a new one.

Added to which I've been working on the Probe for its MOT and, in my garage as far as I can tell, it broke a front spring which has gone through the tyre when I moved the car forwards.  Big problem was that it was too low to get a jack under with the spring broken and the tyre flat.  £250 for parts alone for this MOT!!

All this is getting to me now - wished I hadn't just bought a new television!!!!

We had this problem.  I had just given my 16v scorp to my daughters family, and on their first outing they lost all the gearbox fluid, fortunately only a mile from home.  I thought the old girl was probably scrap, but we found a perished flexible hose was the problem.  This renewed, new fluid poured in, and everything was back to normal!

Total cost £20 or thereabouts.

To prove that trouble comes in pairs in Scorpio World, we then experienced total electrical failure ... mentioned in the thread of that name.

No one can say these are not interesting cars.  Now I shall be looking for another one  -    for me.
