2.9 cossie, fans permantly running

anyone any ideas why the cooling fans cut in a 30 secs after the engine starts, then they stay on all the time even if cold engine and air con switched off

hi there most times it's a pressure issue with the air con. disconnect the multiplug from the pressure switch on the air con. it's next to the cover on the right hand headlight (remove cover and follow wiring from the pressure switch on the air con rec/dryer). if this fixes your problem, then you more than likely need a regas. hth

hi mate thanks for that. ill try it. but should they come on even with the aircon switched off on the fascia? im not so sure its a sensor on engine block, is there a wiring loom diagram anywhere on the site scorpio man?

Mine did that aswell, Stopped after i rebuilt the fuse box, it got a little wet with all this rain lately even though the drain holes are clear?

The fans are switched by the engine ECU and by the A/C pressure switch so disconnect one at a time and see which makes it stop. If the ECU then either the coolant temperature sensor may be duff or water may have got through into the passenger compartment and soaked the black box. If the A/C then this would indicate pressure too high - have you overfilled it with one of those DIY recharge kits? Darren

| Hi Scorpy_Newby -- on a sideline, maybe a trivial thing but a real problem to me -- can you tell me how you got to the underside nuts of the driverside fusebox? I just want to lift my fusebox out of the well and get to the connectors on the bottom; they 'rattle' after 11 years and need tightning, spraying and cleaning. It is just I can't get to these d*** nuts, even with the dashfascia off and the instrumentcluster off. Any suggestions? If you want to go PM fine: reinier.mariaATorange.nl Looking forward, Ray

Long time since I did mine but I believe if you take out the air ducts after removing evrything else then you have to lay on your back (Ouch!) get the seat right back and get your head right into the footwell so you are looking up and then using a 10mm socket on an extention bar with possibly a swivel joint you can get at the nuts, think you have to disconnect some of the connectors first. Once you have completed the job replacement is a reversal procedure. You will then have to retire indoors have a couple of paracetamols and rub in some Linament. With regards to the fans being on all the time, this was a problem on mine, I replaced the cts and the relay, I checked and cleaned all the relevent wiring connectors, changed the satc module and the hbc module, I changed the ots and the de-ice switch etc etc, this was all to no avail. If you look at my posts you will see that finally, I have cured the problem after fitting a new compressor, drier and pressure switch. The pressure switch is the problem bit, afaik this switch actually has 2 switches inside it, (I have opened one up) I think it sends one signal to the ecu and another to the relay for the cooling fans, I may be wrong... Anyway if one side of the switch isn't working you would get the problem with the fans being on all the time (Fail Safe Mode?) This is my theory anyway because my system is now running with NO problems after a long time.... I do hope this is a pointer in the right direction for you.... Pete

You are correct about being two switches, however what it actually does is to only allow the compressor to run if the system pressure is between set limits. If the pressure is too low the system will not run at all. If it's slightly too high the cooling fans will run and the A/C will stay on. If it goes even higher the cooling fans will stay on and the compressor will shut down. Basically one switch controls the fans, whereas the other allows the compressor to run or not. Darren

Hi Guys its freezing outside! disconnected multi plug on pressure switch, fans still run on full power, both of them, tried engine off and back on, they cut in about 15 secs after you start the engine. they only cut in with engine running

| Thanks for your advice. I gathered some courage and this aft I went right in. Dismounted battery; unclamped big drainwell multiplug on driverside fusebox. Took the underside of the dash off, the one with the hoodrelease and the coinbox;took off the dataconnector. Disengaged the hoodreleasecable; just shift the mantle out of the wedge and unhook the innercable. Took off the floppy cover with the footwelllight. Left the lightbulb dangling. Put in a worklamp; collected several tools. Put thick foamrubberprotection (for my back!) over the doorstep and took off the soundcover off the underside of the fusebox by removing 2 large plastic nuts sitting on 2 of the 4 threads. By squeezing in hard I managed to view the 4 nuts holding the fusebox down and managed to unscrew then using an 8mm. Pulled out the net covering the cables, held at 4 corners by plastic clamps. Macro-photographed the lot and looked at my camera's display for orientation. My plan was to lift the fusebox out of the drainwell but, since a number of very thick powercables were stuck I decided to just sprayclean the multiplug connectors organised in 4 rows of - seen from wheelside - blue, green, white and black, from underneath and not remove the fusebox. Sprayed, rinsed, dried, plugged them back in. Tested - all OK! Reversed the process slowly, testing at each step; connecting batterypower on and off. 3 hour job and a stiff back and elbow- and shoulderjoints that only a Famous Grouse will cure - but worth it: Powerwindows working again as well as seatmemory, mirrors, remotecontrol, centrallocking etc. Anyone needing advice mail me - I did it.
