Indicators, lights, aircon, cruise now not working

Hi there (P-Reg 2.9 V6 12V Cologne engine Ultima Estate Auto) I have used the site extensively to solve two problems, but now have a third, which seems related. I will expand: i) Grinding noise last week, turned out to be N/S R wheel bearing, which I duly changed, with the assist of a mechanic to press the bearings into their housing. Problematic, but reasonably straightforward. ii) When I went to start the car after the 4 day lay-off period above, the dials span around (which I'd seen before) and the car gave out a tic-tic-tic-tic-tic-tic while I held the starter position, but no turnover. Via the site and via a knowledgable collegue I ascertained low battery level. I duly put a battery pack in parallel with the internal battery and away she went, no trouble. however After my ten minute test drive I returned home and was nearly shunted by the chap behind, because now I have: No indicators No lights Aircon blows warm, as does normal fan, on lo or 17,18,19... Cruise control does not engage (Not sure about radio cos haven't dug out the code yet) However Yes to hazards Yes to wipers Yes to electric windows During my investigations I have had the battery off, but confident I put all the leads off (getting a new battery over the weekend) and have checked the fuses in the box near the battery. Also the fuse box on the off side had the cover off and looked through, but ran out of time to check the fuses. I did detach the multiplug adjacent to this fusebox, which has a swinging lock arm, but again, believe I have replaced tyhis properly. My queston is, do you think I probably have missed a connection, have I fried the electrics somewhere with the battery pack (not a running car jump start), or do the community know of this type of fault? Thanks in advance, sorry to run on, just flabbergasted!

Think that once you fit a new battery it should be ok, make sure you get a GOOD quality battery of the same power rating or better. Others may add comment to this but I think it is a case that your battery was poor and has now manifest the fact after haveing a period of non useage during your recent repairs. hth Pete

I appreciate the answer, with thanks. The only thing that confuses me is that these things were all working great before the short layoff, unless the battery has dropped like a stone, I cannot imagine that would be the answer? Cheers though, I am a Scorpio Virgin, so don't think me arrogant, far from it.

Cheers Pete Had a look at the battery and the only date I could see was 2004-2005-2006-2007 on top. Could be that it's lost the plot a bit... As you say the forum seems to indicate a huge electrical reliance from the Scorpio, so first diagnosis is gonna have to come from the alternator health tool my old man has... then a multi-meter on the battery to see what it's putting out. Still, the fact that there is no lights whatsoever may point at something a little sinister- I would imagine from the old days of Carb Escorts and Fiestas that even a lower Voltage would bring up some light- especially from the headlights... but I really don't know enough about the electronics in modern cars to say that about the Scorpio. It's certainly put a sting in my back-pocket!

Hi Steveabode, identical situation happened to me the other day. Cause: the large connector sitting square on the driverside fusebox is not in completely. That is caused by its bulbous tiny plastic hinges NOT correctly moved into their receptacles at the bottom of the fusebox, near cable-end of the connector. You have to carefully slide them in under the halfmoon studs and then use the metal clamp to fix the connector. Also if fitted incomplete your fusebox cover will not 'snap' in. Bet this solves your problem, as it did mine. Ciao, Ray

RAY YOU'RE MY HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thankyou so much! The ruddy multiplug has those two locating pins at the cable end that you have to slot in before tilting the plug away from the wing and through the half moon movement and lock it down. You are officially great now in my eyes. THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!!!!

To Pete: Thanks very much for your ideas mate. I tested the battery and I believe it is holding charge OK (holding at 12.5V with engine off) However, the alternator is only just making 12.5V output and doesn't improve, even @4000rpm . So that will lead to my next posting on the forum! A hundred blessings on your Camels or associated livestock...! Steve

| When driving the onboardvoltage, needed for appliances and charging, should be between 13 - 14 V . It MUST be higher than the batteryvoltage in rest should chargingcurrent flow into the battery Test this by depressing your daytripmileageresetbutton (is that the word?) on the instrumentcluster for 10 secs; a beep will sound and repeated depressing of the same button will produce many testresults among which BATT - leave it on and you can exactly measure your onboardvoltage = chargingvoltage as you go or stand! No need for a multimeter. As for diagnose & repair see the relevant websitepages. Ciao, Ray

Right Ray I went out to the car and started it up and did the trip thing- Result was: Voltage at battery: 12 .4V with ignition on, not running Voltage at battery: 13.8 or 13.9 with engine running, no fluctuation with revving. Air-con on full blast drops this to 13.5, air-con plus full beam drops it to 13.1.... Ray, is this too low? It doesn't seem alot to to the battery up to be honest!!

| Ahah - great, you have been playing with your new toy! Marks look quite good however, you will find that an older -- or for that matter even a younger -- battery wil suddenly lose its capacity to hold its charge. Please keep in mind that just starting the old car takes 600 Amps ... which might just make the battery's plates crinkle... What that implies is that suddenly your alarm goes; your instrument needles start flicking round when you turn the ignitionkey; radios will not hold their settings and odd things happen like your boot won't open anymore electrically and so on. I would say today a Scorpio battery should better be replaced every 3 years. But that's a lot of money! Yes - but think of the hassle, each time the 'old' car refuses? Mind you, the car's 10 years old now. Let her have a good battery. Your alternator + regulator seem to do a good job. Why not ake her to a proper servicestation and have the lot (battery/charger/alternator) tested for a second opinion? Worst case they sell you a new battery. Ray
