24V Cossie Alternator

Have just replaced the alternator on my Cossie as the original one was smoking due to power steering fluid weeping onto it. However, new one seems to be getting very hot straight away and I wonder if this is normal, or is there some other fault that will cause my new one to burn out as well. Have cleaned up leaking oil, God it was a mess down there, so that is not the problem for now.
Any advice welcome.

Hello Snoopy thanks for your response. It gets too hot to touch, but I think I was overly concerned, having just had one that went up in smoke. I have only run it round the block since doing the job, and it did seem OK on my return from that. It smelt a bit hot, but that was probably oil and paint on the new unit.
Haven't run it today as I was at Silverstone in another car, so my run to work in the morning will be the test. Fingers crossed.
By the way, the advice on removal of the alternator says remove the manifold heat shield - this is not necessary as the mounting bolt can be reached using a long wrench and socket, and passing it up between the anti-roll bar. It's clear if you're underneath doing it. The bolts are tight, mind, so make sure you are 'fully on' before heaving, and my advice is to wear leather gloves in case you slip.
