Aircon Compressor squeaking
« on: Jul 15th, 2007, 3:20pm »

Nasty squeak, squeak, squeak coming from engine bay when aircon is switched on, suspect it's the compressor as still some space left on tensioner.

Is this heading to be terminal for compressor?

How much a new one??

Could just be a little slippage on the drive belt, however if it is a problem I have just changed my compressor, reciever/drier and pressure switch, parts cost £341, all brand new and free next day delivery with NO VAT from

http://shop.coolcaraircon.co.uk/

First class products, first class service.

Hope it isn't a big problem though....

PS  all my aircon issues are a thing of the past now....

Thanks Pete, I'd seen your thread so thanks for the supplier link.

Looks good.  I'll change the belt and if that doesn't stop it I'll order a new comp. Sad Sad.

Just spent zillions on autobox oil cooler and pipes on the Scorpio and brakes/suspension, etc on the Probe.

I think they're all going to be kicked out in favour of a new(ish) Mondeo!!

John,
I have a used one you can have off a 2.3
It was working great before removal so for the cost of a regas it might be worth a gamble  Wink
p.s. i might be able to deliver it to you  Grin

Stuart I gambled with the old one of my 2ltr car and it let me down, I think for the cost of the new compressor as opposed to 500 and odd quid that ford wanted it is a safer bet, would suggest a compressor and drier... if they are faulty, the switch solved my problems outright....

Only my thoughts but now I consider my aircon to be good for another 10 years... we'll see

Thanks Stuart

I'll change the belt first and let you know the outcome.

Like Pete I was worried that an old one would not last and then it'd be two regasses!!

I'm not sure which way to go.  Decisions, decisions..

But will your car be good for another 10 years? Wink

I also have fitted a second hand unit which has served me for two years so far with no problems.
I look on that as a saving of hundreds of pounds

Changed the drive belt this am and no squeaking since so hopefully that's the cure.

Had to order belt from FMD - I've bought cars for less!!

Thanks for help and offers.  I'll let you know if the squeak comes back.

Old belt all ok (usual cracks across the belt) but possibly a tad worn, shiny and stiff.

Is it easyish to change the compressor and drier then? I always thought air con was a specialist job? I do my own servicing and repairs but have never touched air con before would it be possible for me to do it myself? Thanks for your help.

Macro sell a kit to remove the liquid and do it yourself but for the relatively cheap cost i would get an aircon guy to do it for you.

It is an offence to release the gas into the atmosphere

Once the gas has been removed (The garage removed it and stored it for me) it is quite and easy job to replace the components, the hardest part is crancking the handle on the jack to lift the car, oh and the 2 nuts that hold the drier on are a little awkward.
NoNo You are advised to renew any seals, DON'T use the old ones even if they look ok, they cost coppers to buy from Fmd.
Make sure you don't loose any oil from the compressor like I did (about half an eggcupful) this was because the car was up at the front meaning that when you remove the plastic seal (on a new compressor) to connect up the line it leaked out.  try to get the car level (ramps are the answer...
Once everything is reconnected you can then take it back to get the gas refilled (I explained about the loss of oil to the man and he topped it up for me)

Ever since the job has been done the aircon works without fault, I get -1deg from the vents and end up shivering if I leave it on long enough.
One thing I did notice though, if I leave it on low, after a while the air is reduced from the vents, I then turn it up to about 18-19ish and it all starts to work ok again....
I think it is the evaporator freezing up, maybe it is a little too efficient.... Huh
