Thread gone on wheel for cover

Hi all, while screwing the alloy wheel cover back the screw now wont tighten up, i,e threads worn inside the actual wheel, has anyone else had this problem and did they manage to repair. I have a tap and dye set so can put a new thread in, thought id ask as the alloy on all my wheeels inside is turning to dust many thanks jim

If you re-tap the thread it would be oversize for the original fixing bolt. Far better to helicoil it. Kits should be available locally everywhere. http://www.emhart.com/products/helicoil.asp

Hi Jim, you could try smearing the thread with JBWeld and then recutting it. If you,ve never used it its similar to Araldite in as much as it comes in 2 tubes that you mix. I have used it for several repairs in the past including header tanks on radiators.Just make sure you clean out the thread before you start. john.n ps. posted cheque for wheel centre today.

Hi mate, sounds like a good idea mate, i was swapping some of them over from old scorp as they were in top condition, trust me to strip the thread lol. Thanks for sending the cheque, will send the wheel bit out as soon as i receive it many thanks jim
