Ford Scorpio 2.0 16v Auto Help!

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with some problems i have with a Ford Scorpio.

Basically me and my house mate are taking part in car rally for charity. The rally is from London to Naples. One of the rules of this rally is that you have to buy a car for £100, no more and no less. We were lucky enough to get an 'M' reg Ford Scorpio.

The car is in great condition but something seems to be wrong with the engine. More specifically, when you put your foot down it only rev's to about 4000rpm? It just stops there. Also it seems to be over fueling a great deal.

Any ideas?
(just to let you know this is the first time i've seen one of these cars let alone owned one)

Thanks for any help in advance.

Hi Danny and welcome to the site.

Thats a lovely looking car for £100 you have there and you wont get a more comfortable journey to Naples Smiley

Your problem could be a variety of things.

fuel filter. fuel pressure regulator, air filter, plug, plug lead faulty injector etc.

Try cleaning the throttle body (the butterfly part on the inlet manifold)

Does it tick over ok and rev freely up to 4000 or is it a bit rough?

What are your overfuelling signs?

Where are you located and when do you set off on your journey?
A member may be able to do a diagnostic scan for you which should pinpoint the problem.

Thanks Highlander, yeah the car is a really comfy drive. I drove it back from Birmingham (where it was purchased from) on Tuesday and i really enjoyed driving it.

It revs brilliantly up to 4000, no spluttering or juddering. Just as soon as it gets to 4000 it wont go any higher, or faster for that matter.

My signs of over-fueling are my eyes watering and nauseousness when its idling. Ok so its not that bad. But it does smell badly of petrol when its idling. Also it drinks petrol like theres no tomorrow.

Could it be the Oxygen Sensor or the airflow meter? ( a suggestion from a friend)

Also is the car a fast car? because (probably due to the rev issues) when i put the car in Sports Mode and put my foot down flat to the floor it takes a good 25-30secs to get to 60mph. And on the M6 on the way home the other day. It would'nt go past 90mph (not that i condone speeding) Do they usually?

Thanks for the help.

Danny

p.s. were leaving for Naples on the 20th September and I'm based in a place called Huntingdon (Near Cambridge )

hi there

to me, it sounds like the cat. have a look at the exhaust manifold area (shield). are the 2 rubber tubes (for the egr valve) still on the pipes?

see photo in step 4.
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/egrrepair.htm

if they're off, then i'd say it was the cat blocking the exhaust.

hey guys,

Funny you mention those tubes. When i looked the car over those tubes were off and cracked and split. They were the first thing i replaced. But when i put the tubing back on and tested it they blew off. So i clamped them on. Probably not the best thing to have done actually, thinking about it now.

Anyway have  a look at these pics and tell me what you think:

The whole engine:

The pipes clamped on:

haha yeah thats exactly what my plan is  Wink well i was going to just cut the CAT off and get some other exhaust piping the same diameter and weld that in its place?

I just this second cleaned the MAF and it idles alot better now. Still has problems with high revs, but i think sorting out the CAT will solve that.

I cant get round to doing it this week because im going diving in Cornwall for a week with the wife tomorrow night. But i will sort it as soon as i come back. Thanks for the help guys.

As soon as i've come back i'll let you know whats going on with it. Plus the sponsor stickers and decal for it might have come by then.

I think it'd be easier clearing the cat out than fabricating something but see how you get on.

We'll need live updates and pics of the trip remember Wink

p.s. what are you doing with it when you come back? Wink

Hello guys,

Just a quick update,  the CAT is still on the car unfortunately. Having difficulty finding the time and since its getting darker earlier now its a job getting the light. Darn my lack of a proper workshop.

Anyway the stickers have finally come, they sent quite alot of them so the car is going to be plastered haha. I'll post some pics as soon as there all on.

As for what's happening to car after the race is over.... we are racing the car to Naples but not driving back. So unfortunately we will hopefully sell it out there, but if it comes to it then we will just give it away to the closest person i suppose. If anyone wants the car and fancies flying out to Naples to pick it up then let me know and you can have it!
