bad starting

ive a 2.3 scorpio. its been working fine then 2 days ago really hard to start sounded like firing on one cylinder 2-3 mins cleared then perfect.....did same today spluttering coughing for 2 mins then fine
no codes all else fine ...any ideas please? could it be fuel pressure regulator maybe?? seems like could be fuel related but why would it run perfectly after 2 mins?

what scanner are you using? what's your ltft like? what's the output from the lambda sensor like?
have you cleaned anything? MAF or idle bypass valve?

using alex pepers set up....lambda is fine swiching as it should do.... lft is 8%... maf is fine swings from .3 to 1 at 1000 rpm bypass valve cleaned yesterday
its starts perfectly now having been left for 3 hours...its when its left for 2 days it splutters coughs at start up just hangs in and then 2 mins later its perfect....dont see how I can isolate things...feeling its fuel being starved maybe fuel relay closing slowly no idea...
really dont know what to do first

one other thing it had a complete new wiring harness 6 months ago so its not that at least shouldnt be

if it were the iacv wouldnt it give idling problems all the time? ,.
it started this morning no problems ,,,,runs perfectly yet yesterday spluttered for 2 mins when starting then sorted itself out
appreciate the advice.... I feel that its starved of fuel but dont know how to go about this as when it does it fault clears after 2 mins

The iac is more critical when cold. My engine will just about keep running when hot if I disconnect the IAC but stop instantly when cold. If the IAC is playing up the revs often pulse at tickover.

thanks for that...ive cleaned iac tonight and lubricated /oil the main shaft..seems to move freely
guess i just have to keep eliminating things...how can you tell if the fuel pump is running?? ..maybe silly question but if you turn key without cranking should you be able to hear fuel pump? how can you tell if thats running?

The fuel pump will only run till the system get up to pressure, only about a second or two.
If it takes any longer you're fuel is running back.
You can remove the fuel pipe and watch it coming through.
if you do that after a couple of days not using it you will see if there's an initial lack of fuel.
Sounds like its got a very small air leak possibly? allowing the fuel to slowly run back down into the tank emptying the lines?
can you park it somewhere and see if you get a drip?

ah ! I can understand this a little more re the fault...where is best place to remove fuel pipe? do you mean disconnect whilst ignition on and pump running? wont it be under pressure? thanks for advice

Best place to disconnect the fuel supply pipe is just as it enters the fuel rail. Connection is a push fit. For diagram go to:- Home Page

Scorpio Fuel Rai (bottom right)
2.0 and 2.3 Fuel Rail
Disconnect with ignition of, then have someone switch on ignition while you have the disconnected pipe in your hand. Fuel should spurt out immediately. If delay then that could mean draining back if sitting for long periods of time.
It doesn't sound like a pump or wiring problem as this only happens when initially starting and there is no falter or rough running once it does start. Does it tick over smoothly at traffic lights / delays etc. ?

wouldn't necessarily be a visible leak. fuel would run back into the tank or at least away from the fuel rail.
