Door Mirror Assembly Replacement

Hi Some horrible b****r took a shine to my door mirror not for the first time I may add I sourced one and is at present in the paint shop, my problem is taking off the plastic cover plate inside the car to access the securing bolts try as I may this will not budge I have slight movement but I do not want to excert to much force resulting in it breaking can I ask is there a safe method of removal or is it just brute force and crossed fingers.
