Auto Geabox no power in DRIVE

I have a 16V 2.3 1998 170K (mainly motorway) regularly serviced Saloon. For while it has been turbine whining a little when cold and jumping a little first to second (the jumping is simil;ar on my fathers slightly older car). It also jumps a little on DRIVE to REVERSE and vis versa if it is not left to settle a second or so. Yesterday after driving about 1/2mile at 30ish it suddenlt startrted reving without power. I selected 2 on the gear and it appeared to work OK. After about 1 1/2 miles I stopped and DRIVE worked again for aboutr 500 yards then I stopped for the day (work). On dring back that evening I had the same problem but this time hit the overdrive button adn this appeared to solve it for the short journey home. The next day I waited 20 second or so after ignition then put the car into DRIVE. After a few second of silence there was a slight clunk and when I tried to move off it just reveved with no drive to the wheels. When I pressed overdrive it clunked slighlt and worked fine for the journey to work. 1) I am guessing that something strange is happening with the DRIVE selection and it is going to Neutral?? Why switching off overdrive cures this I can't see. 2) The fluid is fine as regards level and it pink with a tint of brown (similar to my fathers). Would one expect pure pink/red on 170K box? 3) With reference to the a site a fluid and filter change would have been a good idea as soon as the whining started. I did note it before the last service but the specialist dealer did not comment on it during the service. Any ideas appreciated. I am considering changing the filter and gear oil. I am also trying to sort out and OBD2 (Basingstoke). For reference it has just (2 months ago) been in a specialist dealer for 7 months having the timing chain and guides replaced and a few other bit sorted. (The dealer had major problem over this period). I can't imagine this has contributed to the problem, but it might be relevant to someone,

Maybe a good idea to check/clean the connectors on the wireing loom that goes from the right hand side connecting block to the autobox. It could be that with all the damp weather and the long layup in the garage there could be corrosion in the contacts.... hth Pete

Hi, Sounds to me (an Auto Trans Specialist), like the one way clutch in the overdrive unit has failed. Bearing in mind the age / mileage, and that the transmission has to come out and be half stripped to do the job, that a rebuilt auto box will be the most economic solution. Dont waste your time and money changing oil and filter it will not cure your problem. HTH, Regards Dave

Dave could you possibly give us a few pointers on autoboxes? eg a small list of problems, symptoms and causes? that would be very helpful, we could possible add it to the faultfinding page Stuart

Thanks for all the messages. I'm coming to the same conclusion as the person above about the one way clutch. I'm just puzzled why the OD button (OD off) affects it as it should just cut out the top gear? If I had some time I'd look at exactly how these things work. I am suprised as to how suddenly this problem appeared, I did not notice any problem until it went suddenly at 30mph when accelerating mildly. Anyone heard of BK Transmission of Overton. He seems to know his stuff on gearboxes but he's not a Scorpio expert. He's recommneding a second hand box to keep the old girl going for a few more years. Any recommendations as to a good transmission place that is more familiar with the Scorpio?

Pete, After some investigation it turns out you were correct. It seems to be an electrical problem and the gearbox guy said it's a loom problem but I suspect its just the connector. After a provisional go it seems to be working OK I'll have to give it a good clean later. Thanks again for everyones help Mark

Glad you got it sorted Mark, when I stripped my old 2ltr I noticed that there was quite a lot of vardigrease in the big block connectors, that car had also been stood for about 5 months. When I am working on my car I often just unplug connectors and give them a clean up, I think this will stop any future problems (hopefully) Can't beat a bit of (bully) I mean WD40 Pete
