auto 2nd to 3rd...........

Help.....just bought a scorpio ultima estate 2.3 16v automatic . the gearbox is so lovely and smooth that is appart from the change between 2nd and 3rd , if driven very very carefully its fine but keeping your foot on the throttle will cause the revs to rise another 1000rpm then go into 3rd with a thump . If your quick you can take your foot off the throttle which stops it going in with a bang . fluid is fine up to level , and is not brown . all other gears work A1 no probs . Does anyone know a cure , is this going to be expensive ?

thanks for the reply , but all other gearchanges are really smooth cannot be felt really . You think that cleaning that would cure 2nd to 3rd thumping ?

can you give me some examples maybe ? Just seems weird why cleaning that would cure it . Its had full ford service history and apparently theres nothing at all wrong with the box so they say .

The MAF is wondrous but ( like teenage children ) slightly cranky and high maintenace, and controls many of the gearbox's functions.
Give it a clean and get back to us.

My autobox wouldn't change up from first to second unless I took my foot of the accelerator - cleaning the MAF cured it  All the other gears were fine at the time.

THIS, is just one of the wonderous things that keep us interested in these dream machines, it's as if they have an Intelligent mind and know when to ask for something.....

well I cleaned it . couldnt remove it from the main plastic air filter housing though . still same problem , and to be honest it wasnt really dirty .

Are you sure that it's between 2nd and 3rd? Could it also be between 3rd and straight coupling? I'am thinking about the overdrive function. Overdrive reduces rpm by 1000 1/min. If it is this, than pressing the green OD button in the lever would have no effect.

Hi Caprimanuk, I have a similiar problem on my car, the connector to MAF sensor was dirty. Cleaned it and it was ok.

Believe it, the MAF has a great effect on these cars. I just cleaned mine
(almost a brand new one!) and it smoothened my ugly gear change
to "not so ugly". It's not good yet (I recently did a huge engineswap
operation on my Scorps) and I'm looking for the reason for it.
In your case, adjusting the break bands could help, but check the
more obvious and easier things first:
- MAF cleaned with a non residue electric cleaning spray
- Auto Oil level checked with the engine in normal running temp
- Have it scanned - DTC's may give more information
Others will no doubtly give more good tips.

I would not use carb cleaner on the electrical connections as it is likely to have an adverse effect on the plastic. If you couldn't remove the MAF from the main air filter housing ( it's only two clips and then it should pull out although the 'O' ring may be sticking but a spray of WD should sort that), how did you access the elements of the Maf to clean them?. The link put up by Andrew shows them in detail.  .

sorted , it was a dirty maf . drives like a dream now . I think the ebay link I posted I will now leave that one even though it does look good . Mine is so pleasent to drive now . Thanks for your advice guys .
