Hi all newbie here had the car for a few weeks now and its got a strange buzzing noise at 20mph-110mph don't know if its there after that but i would think so, the noise does not increase only the pitch, at 40 mph its worse because something is resonating it only happens on left corners or any left steer even in a straight line road camber can bring the noise on gentle left/right (swaying) steer does too. i'll try to describe the noise 70 mph on a motorway and start to gently sway the car turn the wheel to the right its smooth steer to the left its like driving on the M180 (noisy bit) steer right its smooth and so on, for those who aint drove on the M180 its a bit like the motorway rumble strips but not as bad. I have changed the NS wishbone as the ball joint had some play, all bushes seem fine the only thing i can find thats not upto scratch is the off side steering spindle giving it a vigorous shake/pull/push/twist reveals nothing but start the car up and have someone rock the steering and theres a clicking movement felt through the arm. its not the rod end, maybe the ball joint further investigation needed. would this cause the noise described car is a 1997 cosworth estate 160,000 miles new discs & pads all round wheel bearings are all ok i have changed the wheels round but made no difference. Cheers guys Andy

You say the wheel bearings are ok but I think this is the cause, they don't neccesarily show movement doing the usual checks, is it comming from the front or the rear of the car cos the rears are more prone to wear and the noise you describe sounds like it did when my rear bearings went. pete

I had 3 bearings, (allbeit not oem bearings) fitted in as many months and they were all shot, I ended up buying s/h complete hubs from madmanscorpioman and fitted them, problem cured could be your front ones, they are more awkward to do... pete

Regarding the clicking movement felt through the track rod. Grab the rod & give it a sharp yank. If you feel a click where it goes into the rack then it sounds like the ball joint has worn. If this is the case, then I'd get it looked at pronto as it could be very dangerous

ball and socket joint on the other end of your track control arm may be worn .....worth sliding the sleeve back and checking for movement .....?
